Senior Backend Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable and reliable backend services that handle financial transactions for Jeeves customers in over 20 countries.

• Write clean, testable, and production-quality code using Go, Python, or Node.js/TypeScript.

• Engage in design and code reviews to ensure code quality and best practices.

• Build and utilize RESTful and GraphQL APIs effectively.

• Create inter-service communication using gRPC, message queues, and event-driven architectures.

• Design and optimize schemas for PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and Redis.

• Take ownership of backend features from initial scoping and technical design to deployment, monitoring, and iterative improvements.

• Implement authentication, authorization, input validation, and data protection measures.

• Integrate LLM API calls, such as OpenAI and Anthropic, into backend services.

• Develop secure pipelines for AI-generated outputs, ensuring validation, fallbacks, and graceful degradation.

• Collaborate with AI and data science teams to incorporate model outputs into backend APIs.

• Utilize GitHub Copilot, Claude, Cursor, and similar AI coding tools during daily development.

• Instrument services with structured logging, distributed tracing, and metrics for better observability.

• Participate in on-call rotations and respond to production incidents as needed.

• Contribute to post-incident reviews, CI/CD enhancements, testing infrastructure, and deployment practices.

• Work collaboratively with engineering, product, compliance, and data teams across different regions and time zones.

• Provide documentation, participate in asynchronous design reviews, and give feedback on pull requests.

• Offer regional insights regarding the needs of LATAM customers and products.

⛳️ Requirements

• 5+ years of professional experience in backend engineering, specifically in building and operating production systems.

• Proficiency in English for effective daily written and verbal communication with global teams.

• Strong expertise in at least one backend programming language: Go, Python, or Node.js/TypeScript.

• Experience in designing and developing RESTful APIs, microservices, and event-driven backend systems.

• Solid understanding of relational databases, particularly PostgreSQL, including schema design, query optimization, and data modeling.

• Familiarity with AWS, GCP, or Azure; Docker; Kubernetes; and CI/CD pipelines.

• Proven ability to integrate third-party APIs reliably in production environments, including error handling, retry logic, and observability practices.

• Experience working with globally distributed teams across different time zones and regions.

• Comfortable integrating LLM API outputs into backend services and proficient in using AI coding assistants.

• Preferred: experience in fintech, financial services, payments, or regulated industries.

• Preferred: knowledge of ledger systems, payment rails, KYC/AML, or PCI-DSS.

• Preferred: fluency in Spanish or Portuguese.

• Preferred: experience within startups or high-growth scale-ups.

• Preferred: experience with multi-currency systems or cross-border payment processing.

• Preferred: familiarity with Kafka, RabbitMQ, and event-driven architecture.

• Preferred: global work experience across various countries and regulatory environments.
