Senior Backend Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Ireland, +4 more countries.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, maintain, and operate backend services that support WebRTC and Voice SDK products.

• Take ownership of Voice SDK proxy services, authentication and token services, push notification services, RTC DNS, and diagnostic logging.

• Enhance the reliability, scalability, and maintainability of customer-facing backend services.

• Refine connection setup, authentication workflows, routing, and service behavior for real-time communication tasks.

• Build and enhance observability through logs, metrics, dashboards, alerts, and operational tools.

• Increase visibility into push notification delivery and monitor and troubleshoot APNs and FCM integrations.

• Diagnose production issues across backend services, networking layers, and client connectivity.

• Enhance deployment processes, rollout safety, and production readiness for distributed services.

• Transform recurring customer and operational challenges into lasting engineering improvements.

• Collaborate with mobile, JavaScript, infrastructure, and various other engineering teams.

• Influence the architecture and technical direction of backend systems that support WebRTC products.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive professional experience in building and operating backend systems in production environments.

• Significant experience with distributed systems and service-oriented architectures.

• Proficiency in Elixir or Erlang, or strong backend engineering experience with the capability and eagerness to quickly learn Elixir.

• Experience in building or operating real-time, low-latency, or connection-oriented systems.

• Comprehensive understanding of authentication, service communication, session lifecycle, reliability, and failure recovery.

• Experience managing services throughout their entire lifecycle, including design, development, deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting, and scaling.

• Familiarity with Kubernetes, containers, CI/CD, and modern production infrastructures.

• Experience in logging, metrics, dashboards, alerting, and root-cause analysis.

• Good understanding of networking fundamentals and a capability to troubleshoot across software, networking, and infrastructure boundaries.

• Strong communication abilities and an aptitude for effective collaboration with engineers across the tech stack.

• Nice-to-have: Experience with WebRTC, VoIP, voice/video communications, or other real-time communication systems.

• Nice-to-have: Experience with WebSockets or other persistent connection technologies.

• Nice-to-have: Experience with push notification infrastructure such as APNs or FCM.

• Nice-to-have: Experience with DNS, edge routing, service discovery, or globally distributed systems.

• Nice-to-have: Experience in building internal diagnostic, observability, or troubleshooting tools.

• Nice-to-have: Experience in developing backend services that support mobile or JavaScript SDKs.
