Scientific Full Stack Developer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Colorado.

📋 Description

• Provide support to the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) on a long-term contract.

• Develop intuitive, accessible, and responsive web interfaces to convey essential space weather information.

• Assist in the modernization of SWPC’s online presence and Testbed applications.

• Collaborate with Web and Testbed teams, as well as developers from the Technology Division.

• Convert scientific and operational needs into clean, user-focused designs.

• Create user-friendly, responsive interfaces for web applications and product delivery systems.

• Aid in the creation of wireframes, mockups, and prototypes based on feedback from stakeholders and usability objectives.

• Update legacy applications utilizing Vue, React, and Svelte.

• Develop data-rich interfaces with a strong focus on user experience.

• Incorporate generative AI and machine learning capabilities into client-facing scheduling and decision-making tools.

• Design and enhance back-end systems using Java, Python, and Node.js.

• Create RESTful APIs using Python and Django.

• Work with databases such as Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB.

• Build and maintain ETL pipelines and services using Prefect.

• Deploy applications to dedicated servers utilizing Docker.

• Manage and refine software architecture for efficiency, scalability, and performance.

• Organize and oversee projects, including scope, budget, and deadlines.

• Lead developers while providing technical guidance and conducting code/QA reviews.

• Engage with clients and stakeholders to ensure alignment on project objectives.

• Evaluate stakeholder requirements and translate them into actionable Agile/Scrum tasks.

• Test and conduct quality assurance on the work of other developers.

• Write automated testing scripts using Selenium and Playwright.

• Debug and consistently enhance application architecture.

• Design and construct demo applications and performance-based campaigns to showcase product capabilities.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Master’s degree in atmospheric science, space physics, geophysics, engineering, computer science, graphic design, human-computer interaction, or mathematics from an accredited institution.

• A minimum of 8 years of experience in related fields.

• Proven track record as a Full-Stack Developer, with prior experience in a senior or lead role.

• Strong expertise in JavaScript frameworks such as Vue, React, and Svelte.

• Solid experience in back-end development using Java, Python, and Node.js.

• Proficient with SQL and NoSQL databases, including Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB.

• Practical experience with Docker for application deployment.

• Familiarity with automated testing tools such as Selenium and Playwright.

• Knowledge of ETL processes and tools like Prefect.

• Experience in integrating AI/ML features into production applications.

• Strong project management abilities, with experience in Agile/Scrum methodologies.

• Excellent communication skills for client-facing interactions.

• Demonstrated capability to lead and mentor a development team.

• Candidates must be a U.S. Citizen or Green Card Holder to be eligible.

• U.S. Citizens must have resided in the U.S. for 3–5 years prior to application.

• Desired: experience with Drupal or similar CMS platforms.

• Desired: fundamental understanding of user research methods such as surveys, user interviews, or A/B testing.

• Desired: interest or coursework in space science, atmospheric physics, or scientific visualization.

• Desired: familiarity with web API integration and browser-based scientific data visualization.

• Desired: experience with Git or other version control systems.

• Ability to effectively communicate design intent and usability rationale to both technical and non-technical audiences.
