Safety Specialist

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Oversee the Field Service Safety Program, Operations Procedure, SSSP Template, equipment-specific Energy Control Procedures, and the safety forms package.

• Evaluate and authorize energized electrical work permits, confined space entry permits, and Pre-Task Plans.

• Ensure adequate staffing for two-person energized testing and tasks requiring an attendant.

• Submit safety plans tailored to each site to general contractors prior to the commencement of construction work.

• Perform documented weekly inspections of work areas and equipment relevant to applicable jobs.

• Conduct audits of lockout/tagout practices, refrigerant work, PPE selection, monitoring, and tool accountability.

• Address safety issues and withdraw unsafe equipment or insufficient procedures from use.

• Exercise stop-work authority when activities pose imminent hazards.

• Provide or coordinate safety orientations while maintaining training and qualification records.

• Verify EPA Section 608 certifications along with training and PPE for subcontractors or temporary labor.

• Initiate retraining when assignments, equipment, procedures, inspections, or incidents indicate knowledge gaps.

• Maintain OSHA injury and illness records, including the OSHA 300 and 300A forms, along with annual postings.

• Ensure that incidents are reported within 24 hours and investigated within 72 hours.

• Lead root cause analyses, monitor corrective actions, and report incident trends using DART terminology.

• Manage the response to refrigerant releases and related reporting.

• Oversee emergency lock removal procedures and post-exposure medical follow-up.

• Collaborate with general contractors, host site safety representatives, and data center facility operations teams.

• Ensure adherence to host site plans and customer permit-to-work systems.

• Confirm that approved customer procedures are available before commencing work in live facilities.

• Handle OSHA and EPA inspection responses and escalate any unaddressed hazards.

• Assist with customer safety prequalification submissions and liaise with workers' compensation loss control.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of five years of hands-on experience in environmental, health, and safety within mechanical construction, HVAC service, industrial refrigeration, electrical contracting, or mission-critical facilities.

• Equivalent experience as a working technician or foreman with formal safety responsibilities will be accepted.

• OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification is required.

• OSHA 30-Hour General Industry certification must be obtained within 12 months of hiring.

• Proficient knowledge of lockout/tagout procedures, including group and multi-employer isolation practices.

• Familiarity with NFPA 70E energized work practices and arc flash risk assessment.

• Understanding of permit-required confined space entry protocols.

• Knowledge of fall protection measures and rescue planning.

• Experience in incident investigation, root cause analysis, and OSHA recordkeeping.

• Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certification, or the ability to acquire these within 60 days of hiring.

• EPA Section 608 Type II certification required within 12 months of hire and Universal certification within 24 months.

• A valid driver’s license with a satisfactory motor vehicle record.

• Capability to obtain access credentials for construction sites and data centers.

• Physical ability to wear required PPE, climb ladders, work on elevated platforms, enter confined spaces, and respond outside normal business hours.

• A bachelor’s degree in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, environmental science, or engineering.

• CSP, ASP, GSP, CHST, or OHST certification, or active candidacy in any of these programs.

• Direct experience in data center commissioning or critical facilities service, including permit-to-work and method execution.

• Familiarity with A2L refrigerants, low-pressure centrifugal chillers, CO2 transcritical systems, or UPS battery systems and DC arc flash assessment.

• Background in environmental compliance, including regulated waste streams and refrigerant management as stipulated by the Clean Air Act and AIM Act.

• Experience in developing a safety function from an existing written program.

• Ability to work effectively without a pre-established HR infrastructure.
