This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Lead the advocacy strategy for state and local initiatives across around 20 states in the Midwestern and Southern U.S.

• Formulate and enhance advocacy strategies for USGBC and LEED at both state and local levels.

• Oversee the execution of sanctioned strategies and priority initiatives.

• Monitor, assess, and react to developments in green building policies within legislatures, agencies, and local authorities.

• Act as a representative of USGBC in advocacy coalitions, policy discussions, and strategic forums.

• Establish and nurture relationships with state and local policymakers, as well as USGBC allies.

• Provide education to elected officials and agency personnel through meetings, briefings, events, and lobbying efforts.

• Facilitate the involvement of government officials in USGBC events, such as LEED tours and plaque ceremonies.

• Cultivate subject matter expertise and contribute to policy briefs and articles.

• Collaborate with internal teams and contracted consultants to identify and respond to challenges and opportunities.

• Align policy-related content with the Communications Director.

• Act as a local spokesperson and assist with public relations efforts and events.

• Support federal policy initiatives in designated states as needed.

• Report to the State & Local Advocacy Associate Director and work collaboratively across departments with Communications, Market Transformation and Development, community leaders, and members.


⛳️ Requirements

• 4 to 7 years of experience in managing state or local advocacy or policy.

• Preferred experience in communicating about public policy issues.

• Experience across multiple jurisdictions is preferred.

• Experience with nonprofit or government organizations is desirable.

• Relevant federal government or policy experience may fulfill experience requirements.

• A Bachelor’s degree is required.

• A Master’s degree is preferred.

• Preferred academic fields include Public Policy, Political Science, Environmental Science, Energy, Engineering Technology/System(s).

• Proficiency in Microsoft Suite is necessary.

• Experience with legislative tracking platforms is advantageous but not mandatory.

• Skills in policy monitoring, research, and analysis are required.

• Competence in advocacy campaign planning and execution is essential.

• Strong relationship-building and stakeholder engagement abilities are necessary.

• Excellent written, verbal communication, and public speaking skills are required.

• High attention to detail and commitment to follow-through are vital.

• A strategic, entrepreneurial, proactive, and adaptable mindset is essential.

• LEED Green Associate or LEED AP certification is preferred, or a commitment to obtain LEED GA within 12 months.

• Ability to work Monday through Friday, from 9 AM to 5:30 PM in the Central or Eastern time zone.

• Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends while traveling.
