Process Safety Manager

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Pennsylvania.

📋 Description

• Oversee the creation, execution, deployment, and ongoing refinement of the organization's Process Safety Management and Risk Management initiatives.

• Develop corporate process safety standards, procedures, governance frameworks, and performance benchmarks.

• Serve as the primary technical expert for process safety issues across North American operations.

• Ensure adherence to OSHA PSM, EPA RMP, NFPA standards, hazardous materials regulations, and other relevant requirements.

• Analyze regulatory changes and translate them into actionable compliance strategies.

• Conduct compliance evaluations and pinpoint opportunities for risk mitigation and program improvement.

• Facilitate interactions with regulatory bodies, insurance representatives, and third-party auditors.

• Organize, lead, and document Process Hazard Analyses, HAZOP, What-If, Checklist, FMEA, LOPA, and other risk evaluations.

• Direct multidisciplinary teams in recognizing process hazards, assessing safeguards, and proposing risk reduction strategies.

• Monitor and confirm the execution of PHA recommendations and corrective measures.

• Assist in facility siting studies, chemical hazard assessments, and initiatives aimed at preventing major accidents.

• Lead and uphold formal Management of Change procedures.

• Review suggested modifications and ensure the implementation of necessary safeguards before startup.

• Lead or assist in investigations related to process safety incidents, near-misses, releases, fires, explosions, and significant operational occurrences.

• Apply root cause analysis methods and guarantee that corrective actions are executed and verified.

• Disseminate lessons learned across the organization to avert future occurrences.

• Collaborate with Engineering and Maintenance on mechanical integrity, inspection strategies, risk-based inspection, and reliability initiatives.

• Provide process safety oversight for facility expansions, process changes, new technologies, capital projects, and new product launches.

• Conduct design reviews and hazard assessments; engage in Pre-Startup Safety Reviews and startup readiness evaluations.

• Perform process safety audits, compliance evaluations, gap analyses, and site assessments.

• Monitor the closure of corrective actions and develop and track process safety KPIs.

• Support emergency response planning, crisis management, drills, exercises, and major incident preparedness.

• Provide technical support during safety emergencies as required.

• Design and deliver process safety training for leadership, engineers, operators, maintenance staff, and EHS professionals.

• Foster a proactive process safety culture, mentor facility teams, and establish organizational competency and knowledge-sharing initiatives.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Occupational Health & Safety, Industrial Engineering, or a closely related technical field is preferred.

• At least 5-8 years of progressive experience in EHS and/or Process Safety within chemical manufacturing, life sciences, specialty chemicals, pharmaceuticals, industrial manufacturing, oil & gas, or similar high-hazard industries.

• Proven experience managing OSHA PSM and EPA RMP-regulated processes.

• Experience in facilitating Process Hazard Analyses (PHA) and HAZOP studies.

• Experience in leading Management of Change (MOC) programs and incident investigations.

• Established ability to collaborate with operations, engineering, maintenance, and leadership teams.

• Expertise in OSHA Process Safety Management (29 CFR 1910.119).

• Strong understanding of the EPA Risk Management Program (40 CFR Part 68).

• Familiarity with CCPS risk-based process safety principles and methodologies.

• Knowledge of NFPA standards, hazardous materials management, fire protection systems, and process safety engineering principles.

• Proficient in HAZOP, What-If Analysis, FMEA, LOPA, Bow-Tie Analysis, and Root Cause Analysis methodologies.

• Ability to interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, process flow diagrams, and technical specifications.

• Strong project management and organizational capabilities.

• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

• Proficient written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.

• Capability to manage multiple priorities across various facilities simultaneously.

• Strong facilitation and leadership abilities for cross-functional teams.

• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and process safety or EHS management systems.

• Ability to work independently in a remote environment while maintaining a high level of collaboration and engagement.

• Preferred certifications include Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Process Safety Professional (CCPSC), Professional Engineer (PE), and training/certification in Incident Investigation or Root Cause Analysis.
