Process Safety Manager

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Belgium, +3 more countries.

📋 Description

• Provide strategic direction for process safety management initiatives throughout European operations

• Formulate and execute regional process safety strategies that align with corporate standards and business goals

• Create process safety governance frameworks, expectations, and performance indicators

• Foster a culture of process safety through leadership involvement, employee participation, and ongoing improvement

• Ensure adherence to European, national, and local regulations concerning process safety and hazardous materials

• Offer technical expertise on Seveso III and other major accident prevention mandates

• Collaborate with regulatory bodies and assist in inspections, audits, permitting, and regulatory filings

• Lead Process Hazard Analyses employing HAZOP, What-If, FMEA, LOPA, and other recognized techniques

• Generate risk-reduction recommendations and oversee the implementation of corrective actions

• Direct Management of Change initiatives and confirm risk mitigation prior to startup

• Provide oversight on process safety for capital projects, facility expansions, equipment upgrades, and new processes

• Engage in design reviews, hazard assessments, pre-startup safety evaluations, and commissioning activities

• Conduct investigations into process safety incidents, near misses, fires, explosions, chemical releases, and high-potential events

• Formulate corrective and preventive measures and disseminate lessons learned across various sites

• Supervise programs related to fire, explosion, combustible dust, flammable liquids, reactive chemicals, compressed gases, and hazardous materials

• Develop and implement process safety audits and ensure the resolution of findings

• Assist in mechanical integrity programs and partner with Maintenance and Engineering to enhance asset reliability

• Create and deliver process safety training while mentoring facility teams

• Aid in emergency response preparation, drills, crisis management, and business continuity efforts

• Travel approximately 35% of the time to support audits, risk assessments, incident investigations, project evaluations, exercises, and facility engagements across Europe

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Process Engineering, Occupational Safety, or a related technical field

• At least 8–10 years of progressive experience in process safety, EHS, engineering, manufacturing, chemical processing, pharmaceuticals, specialty materials, energy, or industrial operations

• Proven experience in developing, implementing, and managing Process Safety Management programs

• Experience in facilitating Process Hazard Analyses and conducting risk assessments

• Experience leading incident investigations and Management of Change processes

• Successful track record of collaborating with cross-functional operational and engineering teams across various locations

• In-depth knowledge of process safety principles, risk management systems, and major accident prevention programs

• Strong comprehension of Seveso III Directive requirements and European process safety regulations

• Familiarity with OSHA PSM, EPA RMP, CCPS Risk-Based Process Safety principles, NFPA standards, and related industry frameworks

• Expertise in HAZOP, LOPA, FMEA, Bow-Tie Analysis, and What-If methodologies

• Solid understanding of Management of Change, Mechanical Integrity, Incident Investigation, and Emergency Response systems

• Capability to assess fire, explosion, chemical release, and process upset hazards

• Strong analytical, investigative, problem-solving, written, verbal, presentation, project management, and organizational skills

• Ability to influence leaders and stakeholders without direct authority

• Capacity to manage multiple priorities across geographically dispersed operations

• Proficiency in technical report writing, performance metrics development, audit management, Microsoft Office Suite, and EHS management systems

• Ability to interpret complex technical and regulatory requirements and convert them into practical operational solutions

• Strong business acumen and decision-making capability in high-risk operational settings

• Ability to wear required PPE and access industrial operational areas

• Willingness to travel internationally and maintain flexibility across multiple countries and time zones
