Principal Structural Engineer – Transmission Lines

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +3 more states.

📋 Description

• Lead the structural analysis and design of steel poles, timber poles, lattice towers, guyed towers, and specialized structures.

• Utilize expertise in both historical and modern transmission materials, encompassing legacy wood, traditional steel, contemporary high-strength steels, composites, and advanced coatings.

• Assess existing structures for enhancements, reconductoring, fortification, clearance improvements, and joint-use attachments.

• Execute advanced loading evaluations in accordance with NESC, ASCE 7, ASCE 48, ASCE 10, and utility-specific standards.

• Perform structural modeling utilizing PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, TOWER, and related software tools.

• Review and endorse structural packages prepared by others.

• Design bridges, access roads, and analyze the impact of other underground utilities.

• Engineer transmission foundations, including drilled shafts, spread footings, rock anchors, micropiles, and hybrid foundation systems.

• Develop modern foundation systems with high-performance concrete, composite reinforcement, and cutting-edge anchoring technologies.

• Review and verify foundation packages for precision, compliance, and constructability.

• Design retaining wall structures to prevent soil erosion and enhance soil stability.

• Act as Engineer of Record for transmission structural and foundation packages across various states.

• Lead and mentor Senior Engineers, Engineers, and Engineering Associates.

• Establish and uphold structural QA/QC standards, calculation templates, and design methodologies.

• Identify quality concerns, technical risks, and areas for enhancement.

• Provide field support for construction-related issues and address concerns swiftly.

• Present structural solutions to clients and stakeholders.

• Assist project managers with scope development, scheduling, and budget alignment.

• Engage in technical discussions, design reviews, and project strategy meetings.

⛳️ Requirements

• Structural Engineer (SE) License in California and Illinois (mandatory).

• Four-year ABET-accredited engineering degree (Civil or Structural strongly preferred).

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering is required.

• 12–15+ years of progressively responsible experience in transmission structural engineering.

• Proven expertise in transmission poles, towers, and foundation engineering.

• Comprehensive understanding of historical and contemporary transmission materials, including wood, steel, composites, and legacy foundation systems.

• Proficient in PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, L-Pile, MFAD, and other structural/foundation analysis tools.

• Strong knowledge of ASCE 48, ASCE 10, ASCE 7, ASCE 11, NESC, TIA-222, MOP-74, MOP-160, MOP-161, and relevant state structural codes.

• SE licensure in additional states requiring SE for transmission structural work (preferred).

• Familiarity with ASCE 113 for substation structures (preferred).

• Experience in wildfire hardening, resiliency programs, and emergency response engineering.

• Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence clients and mentor fellow engineers.

• Civil or Structural engineering education; a Master's degree is preferred.

• Required Structural Engineer / Professional Engineering (PE) certification.
