Principal Software Engineer – z/OS Connectivity

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Develop a new connectivity agent that enhances Redwood RunMyJobs natively on IBM z/OS.

• Design, create, test, and maintain native software for connectivity and integration on IBM z/OS.

• Establish integrations with C/JNI, JES2/JES3, TSO background TMP, and SMF-based event monitoring.

• Incorporate security measures and user-specific authorization using Redwood’s identity and credential management.

• Create systems-level functionalities involving custom wire protocols, cryptography, and native z/OS integration.

• Diagnose complex issues across mainframe, Unix, and Java ecosystems.

• Enhance the reliability, performance, security, and scalability of mainframe solutions.

• Collaborate with product managers, architects, and engineers to convert customer needs into technical solutions.

• Engage in architecture discussions, design reviews, code evaluations, testing, and release planning.

• Utilize agentic AI for coding, testing, and documentation while ensuring accuracy against IBM z/OS references.

• Record protocols, security frameworks, and platform prerequisites.

• Confirm technical assumptions on live LPARs and assist in architectural decisions.

• Contribute to quality, objectives, and delivery commitments within an agile framework.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of professional software engineering experience with a solid foundation in Java 8+; experience with IBM Semeru or z/OS Java is advantageous.

• Practical z/OS systems integration experience, encompassing JES2/JES3, TSO, RACF/ACF2/Top Secret, SMF, and USS.

• Proficient working knowledge of C.

• Experience with low-level network protocols, including socket programming, custom binary framing, character-encoding conversion, and TLS/keyring security.

• Hands-on experience implementing cryptographic primitives as per specifications using standard libraries like Java JCE, covering key exchange and symmetric cipher methods.

• Strong skills in concurrency and multithreading, with a background in building resilient, long-running daemon processes.

• Capability to effectively work from primary technical sources, such as IBM manuals and RACF/SMF references.

• Familiarity with contemporary DevOps practices and technologies, including Git, CI/CD, Docker, and Kubernetes.

• Proficient use of AI tools in a production engineering context.

• Strong code judgment related to specialized mainframe APIs and AI-generated recommendations.

• Skillful in prompting AI tools and identifying when tasks may be too specialized for AI-assisted methods.

• Ability to maintain an architectural focus on shared platform-integration designs.

• Preferred experience with workload automation products.

• Preferred experience with Sysplex/Parallel Sysplex clustering or z/OSMF REST API.

• Preferred experience with CA-Panvalet, CA-Librarian, or other JCL library tools.

• z/OS Assembler experience is a plus, though not a baseline requirement.

• Preferred experience in mainframe migration or modernization projects.
