Principal Software Engineer – Mobile Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Take charge of the technical direction and pivotal architectural choices for Canva’s hybrid mobile platform, encompassing React Native, iOS, and Android.

• Assess what elements should be shared versus native, and how the various platform layers collaborate.

• Transform the architecture into deployed production code, ensuring a foundation of performance, reliability, and observability.

• Launch a React Native product interface that is operational in production within six months.

• Establish reliable capabilities and platform primitives for feature teams.

• Guide Staff and Senior engineers through the migration of mobile architecture.

• Collaborate with major product teams to enhance platform adoption and create reliable engineering patterns.

• Influence Canva’s long-term mobile architecture and impact over 800 frontend engineers.

• Develop foundational elements utilized by Canva product teams across iOS, Android, and web.

⛳️ Requirements

• Principal-level experience in constructing or significantly advancing large-scale cross-platform mobile architecture in a production setting.

• Proven experience in migrating a mature mobile product to a new architecture while it remains active and growing.

• Principal-level technical leadership across various teams.

• Organization-wide influence on architecture.

• Practical implementation experience.

• Strong engineering judgment and ability to apply first-principles reasoning.

• Understanding of shared-code runtimes, native boundaries, bundle delivery, and performance profiling on actual devices.

• Profound knowledge of iOS and Android fundamentals.

• Expertise in mobile performance, reliability, crash monitoring, and optimization at scale.

• Experience with platform architecture, shared capabilities, libraries, abstractions, and infrastructure.

• Solid grasp of data structures, complexity, and system-level trade-offs.

• Relevant experience with React Native and React; Flutter, Kotlin Multiplatform, or similar production-scale cross-platform experience is acceptable.

• Nice to have: Knowledge of React Native internals, Rust or C/C++, contributions to open-source projects, mobile CI/CD, over-the-air updates, and AI tooling experience.

• Must be willing to relocate to Australia; a work visa and relocation package will be provided.
