Principal Software Engineer – Mobile Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Take charge of crucial architectural decisions for Canva's hybrid mobile platform utilizing React Native, iOS, and Android.

• Determine which components should be shared, which should remain native, and how the various layers will interact.

• Transform the architecture into production-ready code, ensuring foundations of performance, reliability, and observability.

• Launch a React Native product surface into production within a six-month timeframe.

• Create stable capabilities and platform primitives for feature teams.

• Guide Staff and Senior engineers through the migration of the mobile platform.

• Collaborate with major product teams to enhance platform adoption.

• Develop trusted engineering patterns for mobile architecture.

• Impact mobile architecture decisions across more than 800 frontend engineers.

⛳️ Requirements

• Principal-level experience in constructing or significantly advancing large-scale cross-platform mobile architecture in a production environment.

• Proficiency in React Native and React, or extensive experience with Flutter, Kotlin Multiplatform, or another robust cross-platform framework.

• Experience in leading the migration of a well-established mobile product to a new architecture while it remains live and growing.

• Principal-level technical leadership across multiple teams.

• Influence at the organization-wide level in shaping architecture, platforms, standards, or technical direction.

• In-depth hands-on technical knowledge and comfort with challenging implementation details.

• Strong engineering judgment and ability to apply first-principles reasoning.

• Understanding of shared-code runtimes, native boundaries, bundle delivery, and performance profiling on actual devices.

• Solid foundations in iOS and Android development.

• Expertise in mobile performance, reliability, crash monitoring, and optimization at scale.

• Knowledge of platform architecture that includes shared capabilities, libraries, abstractions, and infrastructure.

• Strong engineering fundamentals encompassing data structures, complexity, and system-level trade-offs.

• This role requires relocation to Australia.

• A work visa is required and will be provided as part of the relocation package.
