Principal Software Engineer – Mobile Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of significant architectural choices for Canva’s hybrid mobile platform, encompassing React Native, iOS, and Android.

• Determine which components should be shared, which should remain native, and how various platform layers should collaborate.

• Transform the architecture into deployed production code, ensuring it has a foundation of performance, reliability, and observability.

• Successfully launch a React Native product surface into production within a six-month timeframe.

• Create dependable capabilities and platform primitives for feature development teams.

• Guide Staff and Senior engineers through the transition to the mobile platform.

• Collaborate with major product teams that are adopting the platform.

• Develop trusted and reusable engineering patterns.

• Impact mobile architecture decisions among over 800 frontend engineers.

• Establish foundational elements utilized by Canva product teams across iOS, Android, and web.

⛳️ Requirements

• Experience in building or significantly advancing a large-scale cross-platform mobile architecture in a production environment.

• Proven record of leading a substantial migration of a mature mobile product to a new architecture while it is live and expanding.

• Demonstrated principal-level technical leadership across multiple teams.

• Organisation-wide influence on architectural decisions.

• Hands-on technical expertise with the capability to navigate challenging implementation specifics.

• Strong engineering judgment and ability to apply first-principles reasoning.

• Knowledge of shared-code runtimes, native boundaries, bundle delivery, and performance profiling on actual devices.

• In-depth understanding of iOS and Android fundamentals.

• Experience with mobile performance, reliability, crash monitoring, and scalability optimization.

• Familiarity with shared capabilities, libraries, abstractions, and infrastructure across engineering teams.

• Solid engineering fundamentals, including data structures, complexity, and system-level trade-offs.

• Relevant experience with React Native and React; familiarity with Flutter, Kotlin Multiplatform, or other production-scale cross-platform stacks is also considered.

• Nice-to-have: Understanding of React Native internals, Rust or C/C++, open-source contributions, mobile CI/CD, and AI tooling experience.
