Principal Software Engineer – Mobile Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Take charge of the technical direction and architectural choices for Canva’s hybrid mobile platform across React Native, iOS, and Android.

• Decide what components should be shared, what should stay native, and how the various layers will interact.

• Transform the architecture into production-ready code while ensuring performance, reliability, and observability are foundational.

• Launch a React Native product interface live in production within a six-month timeframe.

• Guide Staff and Senior engineers through the migration of mobile architecture.

• Collaborate with major product teams to enhance platform adoption and establish reliable engineering practices.

• Influence Canva’s mobile architecture, impacting over 800 frontend engineers.

• Develop and refine shared mobile infrastructure utilized by product teams.

• Enhance Canva’s iOS and Android experience for hundreds of millions of users.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience in building or significantly evolving a large-scale cross-platform mobile architecture in a production environment.

• Demonstrated experience leading a substantial migration of a mature mobile product to a new architecture while it remains live and expanding.

• Principal-level technical leadership across various teams.

• Architectural influence across the entire organization.

• Strong hands-on technical expertise and comfort with complex implementation details.

• Excellent engineering judgment and ability to reason from first principles.

• Understanding of shared-code runtimes, native boundaries, bundle delivery, and performance profiling on actual devices.

• Solid knowledge of iOS and Android fundamentals.

• Experience with mobile performance, reliability, crash monitoring, and optimization at scale.

• Familiarity with platform architecture, shared capabilities, libraries, abstractions, and infrastructure.

• Strong grounding in data structures, complexity, and system-level trade-offs.

• Experience in React Native and React, or extensive experience with Flutter, Kotlin Multiplatform, or another production-scale cross-platform stack.

• Nice to have: knowledge of React Native internals, Rust or C/C++, contributions to open-source projects, mobile CI/CD experience, and AI tooling knowledge.

• This role requires relocation to Australia; a work visa will be provided.
