Principal Software Engineer – Mobile Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia, +1 more country.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of critical architectural decisions for Canva’s hybrid mobile platform encompassing React Native, iOS, and Android.

• Determine which components should be shared, which should remain native, and how the platform layers integrate.

• Transform the architecture into deployable production code with a focus on performance, reliability, and observability.

• Deliver a React Native product interface into production within a six-month timeframe.

• Establish robust capabilities and platform primitives for feature teams.

• Guide Staff and Senior engineers through the migration process.

• Collaborate with major product teams to enhance platform adoption and develop trusted engineering patterns.

• Impact mobile architecture across more than 800 frontend engineers.

• Create foundational elements utilized by every Canva product team on both iOS and Android.

⛳️ Requirements

• Experience in building or significantly enhancing large-scale cross-platform mobile architectures in a production environment.

• Proficient in React Native and React, or extensive experience with Flutter, Kotlin Multiplatform, or another production-grade cross-platform technology.

• Proven track record of leading a substantial migration of a mature mobile product to a new architecture while it remains live and growing.

• Principal-level technical leadership across various teams.

• Influence on architectural decisions at an organizational level.

• In-depth technical knowledge and comfort with complex implementation details.

• Strong engineering judgment and reasoning based on first principles.

• Familiarity with shared-code runtimes, native boundaries, bundle delivery, and performance profiling on actual devices.

• Comprehensive understanding of iOS and Android fundamentals.

• Expertise in mobile performance, reliability, crash monitoring, and large-scale optimization.

• Experience in platform architecture involving shared capabilities, libraries, abstractions, and infrastructure.

• Strong foundational knowledge in data structures, complexity, and system-level trade-offs.

• Nice-to-have: Knowledge of React Native internals, Rust or C/C++, contributions to open-source projects, mobile CI/CD, and experience with AI tooling.
