Principal Software Engineer – Mobile Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia, +1 more country.

📋 Description

• Take charge of essential architectural choices for Canva's hybrid mobile platform encompassing React Native, iOS, and Android.

• Determine what elements should be shared, what must stay native, and how the various layers interact.

• Transform the architecture into deployed production code with a focus on performance, reliability, and observability.

• Deliver a React Native product interface to production within a six-month timeframe.

• Guide Staff and Senior engineers through the migration of mobile architecture.

• Collaborate with key product teams to enhance platform adoption and establish reliable engineering practices.

• Affect mobile architecture choices for over 800 frontend engineers.

• Create foundational elements utilized by Canva product teams on both iOS and Android.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven production experience in building or significantly advancing large-scale cross-platform mobile architectures.

• Familiarity with React Native and React, or extensive expertise with Flutter, Kotlin Multiplatform, or another production-grade cross-platform stack.

• Experience in leading a substantial migration of a mature mobile product to a new architecture while it is actively being used and expanded.

• Principal-level technical leadership across multiple teams.

• Proven ability to influence architectural decisions across various groups or a large engineering organization.

• Hands-on implementation experience demonstrating technical depth.

• Understanding of shared-code runtimes, native boundaries, bundle delivery, and performance profiling on actual devices.

• Strong fundamentals in both iOS and Android platforms.

• Experience in mobile performance, reliability, crash monitoring, and optimization at scale.

• Knowledge of platform architecture that includes shared capabilities, libraries, abstractions, and infrastructure.

• Solid engineering fundamentals, including data structures, complexity, and system-level trade-offs.

• Familiarity with React Native internals, Rust or C/C++, contributions to open-source, mobile CI/CD, OTA updates, and AI tools is a plus.
