Principal Software Engineer – Mobile Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of critical architectural decisions for Canva’s hybrid mobile platform, encompassing React Native, iOS, and Android.

• Transform the architecture into deployed production code that prioritizes performance, reliability, and observability.

• Deliver a React Native product interface that is live in production within six months.

• Guide Staff and Senior engineers through the migration of the mobile platform.

• Collaborate with major product teams to adopt the platform and establish reliable engineering patterns.

• Shape mobile architecture decisions impacting over 800 frontend engineers.

• Develop shared capabilities, libraries, abstractions, and infrastructure for Canva’s mobile products.

• Influence how Canva operates on iOS and Android for the upcoming decade.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience in building or significantly evolving large-scale cross-platform mobile architectures in production.

• Proficiency with React Native and React, or extensive experience with Flutter, Kotlin Multiplatform, or another production-scale cross-platform technology.

• Experience leading the migration of a mature mobile product to a new architecture while it remains live and continues to grow.

• Principal-level technical leadership spanning multiple teams.

• Ability to influence architectural decisions across the organization.

• Strong practical technical skills and comfort with complex implementation details.

• Excellent engineering judgment and ability to reason from first principles.

• Knowledge of mobile runtime concepts: shared-code runtimes, native boundaries, bundle delivery, and performance profiling on actual devices.

• Solid understanding of fundamental principles across both iOS and Android.

• Expertise in mobile performance, reliability, crash monitoring, and optimization at scale.

• Experience with platform architecture that involves shared capabilities, libraries, abstractions, and infrastructure.

• Strong foundational knowledge in data structures, complexity, and system-level trade-offs.

• Nice to have: familiarity with React Native internals, Rust or C/C++, contributions to open-source projects, mobile CI/CD, and AI tooling experience.
