Principal Software Engineer – Mobile Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of crucial architectural decisions for Canva’s hybrid mobile platform, encompassing React Native, iOS, and Android.

• Decide what components should be shared, what should remain native, and how different platform layers integrate.

• Transform the architecture into deployed production code with a focus on performance, reliability, and observability.

• Deliver a React Native product interface in production within a six-month timeframe.

• Establish stable capabilities and foundational platform elements for feature teams.

• Guide Staff and Senior engineers through the transition of mobile architecture.

• Collaborate with major product teams to promote platform adoption and cultivate trusted engineering practices.

• Impact mobile architecture decisions for over 800 frontend engineers.

• Shape the underlying frameworks utilized by Canva product teams across both web and mobile platforms.

⛳️ Requirements

• Principal-level experience in developing or significantly enhancing large-scale cross-platform mobile architecture in a production environment.

• Proficiency in React Native and React, or substantial experience with Flutter, Kotlin Multiplatform, or another production-grade cross-platform framework.

• Proven experience leading a significant migration of a mature mobile product while it remains live and continues to grow.

• Principal-level technical leadership experience spanning multiple teams.

• Organisation-wide architectural impact across multiple teams or a large engineering structure.

• Hands-on technical expertise and practical implementation experience.

• Strong engineering judgment and ability to apply first-principles reasoning.

• In-depth knowledge of shared code runtimes, native boundaries, bundle delivery, and performance profiling on actual devices.

• Solid fundamentals in both iOS and Android platforms.

• Expertise in mobile performance, reliability, crash monitoring, and optimization at scale.

• Comprehensive understanding of platform architecture, shared capabilities, libraries, abstractions, and infrastructure.

• Strong foundational knowledge in data structures, complexity, and system-level trade-offs.

• Nice to have: extensive production experience with React Native and React internals.

• Nice to have: experience with Rust or C/C++.

• Nice to have: contributions to open-source projects related to React Native, Flutter, Kotlin Multiplatform, Expo, or similar ecosystems.

• Nice to have: experience implementing mobile CI/CD, release trains, and over-the-air updates at scale.
