Principal Software Engineer – IBM i, AS/400 Connectivity

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Develop a new connectivity agent that integrates Redwood RunMyJobs directly onto IBM i (AS/400).

• Design, create, test, and support native software for IBM i connectivity and integration purposes.

• Implement native job submission and monitoring features, handle spool files and message/data queues, and facilitate CL/RPG program invocation.

• Connect IBM i functionalities with the Redwood platform through versioned extension points by utilizing native host server APIs and/or IBM Toolbox for Java (JTOpen/jt400).

• Ensure security and per-user authorization by utilizing IBM i user profiles and authority mechanisms.

• Diagnose system-level problems across IBM i, Unix, and Java environments.

• Enhance reliability, performance, security, and scalability of IBM i solutions.

• Collaborate with product managers, architects, and engineers to convert customer needs into technical solutions.

• Engage in architecture discussions, design reviews, code assessments, testing, and release planning.

• Leverage agentic AI to expedite implementation, testing, and documentation while ensuring accuracy against authoritative IBM i references.

• Document connector behaviors and platform prerequisites for field and support teams.

• Contribute to quality standards, goals, and delivery commitments in a dynamic agile environment.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong emphasis on Java 8+.

• Practical experience in integrating with IBM i (AS/400), including CL, native job/spool/queue APIs, IBM Toolbox for Java (JTOpen/jt400), and DB2 for i.

• Proficient in C, including ILE C on IBM i.

• Experience integrating with vendor host-server or RPC-style APIs over TCP/IP, encompassing connection lifecycle management and error handling.

• Strong skills in concurrency and multithreading, with a history of developing resilient, long-running monitoring components such as job polling and spool/file event detection.

• Ability to effectively utilize primary technical sources, including IBM i host-server and API documentation, rather than relying solely on tutorials or unverified AI-generated information.

• Familiarity with contemporary DevOps practices and technologies, including Git, CI/CD, Docker, and Kubernetes.

• Proficient in the use of AI tools within a production engineering context.

• Strong code judgment, particularly in recognizing plausible but incorrect AI-generated recommendations involving specialized IBM i APIs.

• Proficiency in prompting AI tools, combined with the discernment to identify when a task is too specialized for AI-assisted methods.

• Ability to maintain a focus on architecture, abstracting from specific API and connector details to shared platform-integration designs.

• Preferred experience with workload automation products such as Tidal, CA-7, Control-M, Stonebranch, BMC, or RunMyJobs.

• Preferred experience with IBM i clustering or high-availability setups.

• Familiarity with advanced IBM i security concepts, including authorization lists and adopted authority, is preferred.

• A background in RPG/COBOL environments or IBM i modernization initiatives is preferred.

• Experience with mainframe or midrange migration projects is preferred.
