Principal Software Engineer – Data Backend

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in India.

📋 Description

• Take responsibility for the architecture and execution of significant data-driven backend products or platform projects.

• Create and develop scalable systems for both batch and stream processing, data ingestion, orchestration, semantic systems, ontology layers, analytics, query processing, and data products.

• Lead system design choices emphasizing scalability, reliability, maintainability, observability, performance, and data integrity.

• Stay actively engaged with essential code, technical designs, architecture evaluations, and production systems.

• Set engineering benchmarks for code quality, testing, operability, reliability, and system design.

• Spot and enact performance and cost enhancements across distributed compute, storage, querying, and data-serving layers.

• Offer technical guidance across various engineering teams while remaining engaged in the implementation and delivery process.

• Spearhead technical initiatives across the organization or between multiple functions from strategy and design to execution.

• Mentor senior and staff-level engineers, enhancing engineering practices, technical judgment, and system-design expertise.

• Promote technical alignment across teams and address complex architectural and engineering obstacles.

• Assess technology options and architectural compromises for large-scale data and backend systems.

• Enhance system observability, reliability, operational maturity, and readiness for production.

• Recognize opportunities to boost engineering efficiency, system performance, and long-term sustainability.

⛳️ Requirements

• 12–17 years of experience in software engineering, with a consistent track record at the Staff+ or Principal technical level.

• Demonstrated success in creating high-scale, data-heavy software products or distributed systems from inception and managing them in production.

• Outstanding coding skills with high standards for code quality, testing, reliability, operability, and maintainability.

• Profound knowledge of distributed systems, backend architecture, data systems, and performance engineering.

• Strong comprehension of scalability, fault tolerance, distributed computation, storage, querying, and performance trade-offs within systems.

• Proven capability to lead substantial technical projects involving multiple teams without dependence on formal management authority.

• Ability to shape technical strategy and architecture while being deeply engaged in the implementation process.

• Strong mentoring skills with a proven history of elevating the technical proficiency of senior engineers.

• Experience with open-source technologies and developing systems utilizing open-source components is highly preferred.

• Solid understanding of software engineering principles beyond merely assembling managed cloud services.

• Relevant experience with distributed query or analytics engines, large-scale batch or stream processing systems, data-intensive backend platforms, data products and serving systems, high-performance ingestion infrastructure, semantic or ontology platforms, distributed storage and compute systems, performance-focused data processing systems, or open-source distributed systems and infrastructure.

• Must-have skills: Distributed Systems, Software Architecture, Backend Engineering.

• Good-to-have skills: Apache Kafka, Query Optimization, Open Source.
