Principal Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.

📋 Description

• Design, architect, and implement Change Data Capture and data integration technologies.

• Create software to read, interpret, and process database transaction logs.

• Examine database internals, transaction structures, encodings, and storage formats.

• Reverse engineer software that is undocumented or partially documented, including interfaces and data structures.

• Construct, compile, debug, and test software in both mainframe and distributed environments.

• Diagnose intricate performance, reliability, compatibility, and data integrity challenges.

• Lead the technical direction for CDC-related capabilities and engineering standards.

• Mentor engineers and share knowledge in systems programming, database technologies, and software architecture.

• Collaborate with Product Management, Support, and Customer Success teams to address complex customer issues.

• Investigate and resolve urgent customer escalations that involve critical production environments.

• Be available outside of normal business hours when necessary for critical customer issues, production incidents, releases, or operational events.

• Advocate for innovation and the adoption of modern engineering and AI-assisted development practices.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of experience in software engineering.

• Strong expertise in C, C++, or other comparable systems programming languages.

• Experience in developing enterprise-scale software that involves database internals, data replication, CDC, transaction processing, or similar technologies.

• Proven capability to understand and work with large, established legacy codebases.

• Experience in reverse engineering software behavior, transaction logs, binary formats, encodings, or proprietary interfaces.

• Practical experience in building, compiling, debugging, and testing software across mainframe and distributed platforms.

• Strong knowledge of performance optimization, concurrency, reliability, and data integrity.

• Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving capabilities.

• Strong written and verbal communication abilities.

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field.

• Expertise in one or more of the following: Db2 for z/OS, Db2 LUW, Datacom, Adabas, or IDMS (preferred).

• Experience with CDC, replication, recovery, log-reading, or database utility technologies (preferred).

• Familiarity with z/OS, JCL, EBCDIC, packed decimal, and related mainframe technologies (preferred).

• Experience in modernizing established enterprise software systems (preferred).

• Experience with cloud-based or distributed architectures (preferred).
