Principal Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Establish and drive the strategic vision for backend and full-stack engineering practices, architecture, and technical excellence.

• Lead the development of scalable, reliable, and secure distributed systems that serve government clients.

• Act as the technical authority for system architecture, data design, and engineering excellence.

• Design and implement service architectures, data pipelines, and infrastructure patterns.

• Deliver features and enhancements to core services, including customer intake, application screening, and information dissemination.

• Collaborate with product managers and stakeholders to align technical feasibility with business objectives.

• Build and maintain shared libraries, service frameworks, and infrastructure patterns.

• Modernize backend systems and spearhead large-scale technical initiatives to enhance quality, performance, and maintainability.

• Establish engineering best practices for API design, data modeling, testing, observability, security, and code quality.

• Mentor and coach engineers while establishing career development paths for backend professionals.

• Influence technical decisions across teams and provide guidance on architecture and infrastructure initiatives.

• Work across the full stack as needed to address end-to-end problem-solving.

• Lead technical initiatives from conception to production and influence outcomes across various teams.

⛳️ Requirements

• Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.

• Must be a U.S. Citizen.

• Ability to obtain and maintain Public Trust 6C clearance.

• Proven experience in leading and delivering multiple production-ready, scalable distributed systems with measurable business outcomes.

• Experience in architecting and implementing microservice architectures at scale.

• Familiarity with event-driven architectures, asynchronous processing, caching, and data consistency patterns.

• Experience in designing and implementing REST, GraphQL, or similar APIs.

• Proven history of leading modernization efforts from monolithic structures to microservices or transitioning from legacy to modern stacks.

• Experience with observability, monitoring, alerting, structured logging, metrics, tracing, and incident response.

• Knowledge of cloud-native architectures, infrastructure as code, and platforms like AWS, Azure, or GCP.

• Experience with relational and NoSQL databases, data modeling, migration strategies, and data governance.

• Proficient in Java, Python, or other modern programming languages.

• Understanding of distributed systems principles, consistency models, consensus algorithms, failure modes, and reliability patterns.

• Experience with unit, integration, contract, and end-to-end testing.

• Knowledge of performance optimization, capacity planning, and cost optimization.

• Familiarity with authentication, authorization, encryption, secrets management, and secure coding practices.

• Experience in establishing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines.

• Familiarity with Kubernetes or ECS, Terraform or CloudFormation, and DevOps practices.

• Experience with message brokers and event streaming platforms such as Kafka, SQS, or EventBridge.

• Ability to design for reliability, disaster recovery, graceful degradation, circuit breakers, and retry strategies.

• Strong communication skills to convey complex technical concepts clearly to engineers, product managers, executives, and external stakeholders.

• Proven track record in mentoring and developing engineers at all levels.
