Principal Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Establish technical standards and practices to ensure reliable and high-quality software delivery across engineering.

• Design features that enhance navigation within government services and improve user experience.

• Tackle ambiguous, high-impact technical challenges across various domains.

• Take ownership of architectural and data-modeling choices for systems that span multiple services or teams.

• Create durable, reusable shared services, libraries, and components enhanced by AI.

• Generate documentation, technical decision records, and educational materials.

• Set and document the technical direction along with shared engineering standards.

• Provide mentorship to Staff and Senior Software Engineers.

• Collaborate with Engineering Managers, Directors, and cross-functional colleagues on technical strategies.

• Investigate emerging technologies, infrastructure, frameworks, and AI-driven capabilities.

• Serve as the Engineering representative in cross-discipline planning and decision-making processes.

• Report directly to the Engineering Director.

• Carry out other assigned duties as necessary.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of experience in software engineering.

• Profound expertise in system architecture, data modeling, web technologies, and API design.

• Proven history of establishing technical standards or patterns implemented across multiple teams.

• Experience in addressing ambiguous, previously undefined technical challenges and creating effective solutions.

• Proficiency in various programming languages, frameworks, and technology stacks, with the ability to adapt to new ones.

• Capability to utilize AI coding tools responsibly, validate and refine generated code, and promote responsible usage practices.

• Familiarity with Agile software development methodologies such as Scrum, XP, TDD, or BDD.

• Demonstrated technical leadership across team boundaries on a multi-team scale.

• Experience with cloud infrastructure and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools.

• Proven ability to collaborate across disciplines and mentor fellow engineers.

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English.

• Commitment to the mission of Code for America.

• Willingness to travel up to 10% of the time.

• Full-time residence within the United States is required.
