Principal Software Developer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Provide technical leadership for intricate, high-impact projects that span multiple components, services, or teams.

• Define and refine architecture for systems that are scalable, reliable, secure, and maintainable.

• Foster alignment across organizational and system boundaries while effectively communicating technical trade-offs, risks, and recommendations.

• Identify risks and dependencies that cross team lines and establish reusable architectural patterns along with guidance.

• Stay actively involved in architecture, design, prototyping, implementation, code reviews, debugging, and critical technical deliverables.

• Take ownership of technically challenging initiatives from exploration and design to implementation, production readiness, and ongoing operation.

• Enhance developer-facing workflows for application development, API access, documentation, usage visibility, and platform self-service.

• Lead the resolution of complex production issues and address their root causes.

• Elevate engineering standards through architecture and design reviews, code reviews, testing, operational readiness, and continuous improvement.

• Advocate for practices and tools that enhance software quality, developer productivity, reliability, and delivery effectiveness.

• Utilize production signals, customer feedback, and engineering data to refine systems and development practices.

• Employ AI-assisted development tools throughout the software development lifecycle while assessing correctness, security, maintainability, and accountability.

• Mentor and nurture engineers through technical guidance, design discussions, code reviews, and constructive feedback.

• Disseminate knowledge and technical context widely.

• Cultivate a collaborative engineering culture and promote constructive technical decision-making.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

• Over 8 years of professional software engineering experience, including leading technically complex initiatives.

• Strong foundation in software engineering principles along with experience in designing, building, and operating production systems.

• Experience in architecture and system design for complex web applications, API platforms, distributed systems, or similar production environments.

• Proficient in hands-on programming with modern backend and/or frontend technologies.

• Familiarity with cloud services, APIs, data stores, security, and production observability.

• Experience with AI-assisted development tools integrated into software engineering workflows.

• Proven track record of delivering initiatives across multiple systems or teams while influencing technical decisions without direct authority.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Demonstrated capability to mentor engineers and enhance team effectiveness.

• Preferred: experience in designing and operating cloud-based web applications, developer platforms, or APIs at scale.

• Preferred: experience with Python/Django, JavaScript/TypeScript/React, AWS, relational databases, asynchronous processing, containers, CI/CD, and observability tools.

• Preferred: experience with API architecture, security, reliability, scalability, performance, and integrations.

• Preferred: experience in introducing, evaluating, or scaling AI-assisted engineering practices, automation, or modern developer workflows.

• Preferred: experience collaborating with globally distributed engineering and cross-functional teams.
