Principal Infrastructure Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Colombia, +4 more countries.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, manage, and expand the platform that facilitates Sezzle's interest-free installment payments and shopping experience.

• Take ownership of intricate infrastructure projects from architecture and prototyping to implementation, production deployment, and continuous operation.

• Recognize system limitations and execute enhancements to accommodate increased traffic, data volume, and workload complexity.

• Integrate business workflows with infrastructure, application, and data behavior to enhance performance, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.

• Create capacity models, conduct load and stress tests, identify bottlenecks, and verify improvements.

• Design robust AWS account, IAM, network, and service architectures.

• Build and manage the Kubernetes platform, focusing on lifecycle automation, workload isolation, resource allocation, autoscaling, upgrades, and deployment reliability.

• Optimize and scale Aurora RDS for MySQL and Postgres, addressing queries, indexes, connections, replication, failover, schema modifications, and migrations.

• Establish and monitor service-level objectives and error budgets; implement failure isolation, backpressure, load shedding, and safe retries.

• Engage in on-call duties and lead technical recovery efforts during critical incidents and outages.

• Design, test, and document disaster recovery, backup, restoration, and failover processes.

• Develop infrastructure-as-code and operational automation to ensure reproducibility in provisioning, deployments, upgrades, and recovery.

• Enhance observability through metrics, logs, traces, dashboards, and actionable alerts.

• Execute secure infrastructure migrations with phased rollouts, validation, and rollback strategies.

• Enhance cloud cost efficiency via resource right-sizing, utilization, autoscaling, and storage optimization.

• Develop and assess AI-assisted tools for incident investigation, runbooks, anomaly analysis, and repetitive tasks.

• Draft architecture proposals, assess technology trade-offs, review changes to shared infrastructure, and document system operations and failures.

• Report to engineering leadership while collaborating with application engineering, Security, and Compliance teams.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field (mandatory).

• Over 12 years of experience in infrastructure, platform, site reliability, software development, or related engineering fields.

• Significant hands-on experience in designing and managing production infrastructure at scale.

• Extensive production knowledge of AWS, covering compute, IAM, multi-account architectures, VPC design, and private connectivity.

• Profound expertise in Kubernetes, with a strong preference for EKS experience.

• In-depth knowledge of RDS/Aurora for MySQL and/or Postgres at scale.

• Proven track record of delivering infrastructure scaling enhancements.

• Strong coding and automation capabilities using Golang, Python, or similar programming languages.

• Experience with infrastructure-as-code using Terraform or equivalent tools.

• Comprehensive understanding of systems fundamentals, including Linux, networking, DNS, TLS, storage, concurrency, and distributed system failure modes.

• Experience managing a 24/7 high-availability platform with direct customer or revenue implications.

• Willingness to participate in an on-call rotation.

• Hands-on experience with incident response and postmortem analysis.

• Experience in implementing and testing disaster recovery against established recovery objectives.

• Practical knowledge of observability, load testing, capacity planning, and safe CI/CD practices.

• Active engagement with AI tools in engineering or operations.

• Ability to navigate ambiguous technical challenges through production delivery while collaborating across engineering disciplines.
