• Transform Render’s initial colocation site from an empty cage to operational workloads while scaling the foundation to additional sites and thousands of hosts.
• Create low-touch server provisioning processes from the loading dock to production, including netboot, imaging, BMC-driven discovery, and host identity management.
• Collaborate with network engineering on out-of-band management and production connectivity solutions.
• Develop the interface for the Kubernetes platform team to facilitate capacity requests, monitor host health, and manage maintenance activities.
• Sustain the fleet's comprehensive record for hardware, software, and the physical environment.
• Automate the server lifecycle from burn-in and acceptance testing through remediation, staged firmware rollout, and RMA processes.
• Establish production-grade automation with safeguards against destructive actions and site-level failures.
• Influence the technical and operational strategy of the bare metal platform, make build-vs-buy evaluations, define operations at scale, and assist in team recruitment.
• Practical experience in building and managing automation for bare metal fleets within datacenters or colocation facilities.
• Familiarity with both physical hardware and software-driven fleet management systems.
• Proficiency in Go or Python programming languages.
• Experience designing systems that incorporate reconciliation loops and idempotent, failure-tolerant actions.
• Capability to debug tools beneath the abstraction layer.
• Experience managing real failures, such as defective hardware batches, flapping BMCs, or stalled rollouts.
• Extensive knowledge of Linux operating systems.
• Strong understanding of networking fundamentals, including DHCP, PXE, DNS, and BGP.
• Basic knowledge of Kubernetes.
• Excellent communication skills, comfort with ambiguity, and a readiness to question flawed plans.
• Preferred qualifications: experience with bare metal fleets at a scale of thousands of hosts; involvement in early-stage datacenter build-outs; exposure to hybrid public-cloud/owned-hardware environments; familiarity with NetBox, Nautobot, Ironic, Metal3, Tinkerbell, or MAAS; knowledge of reconcilers or state machines for physical infrastructure; experience with component diagnostics, burn-in tools, firmware, Redfish, or IPMI; experience with internal platforms or APIs; and proximity to or ability to frequently visit colocation sites.
• Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States; this position is typically not eligible for new visa sponsorship.
• Four weeks of paid vacation.
• Fourteen weeks of fully paid parental leave for all parents to bond with a newborn, adopted, or fostered child.
