Principal Infrastructure Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Kentucky, +3 more states.

📋 Description

• Establish the vision for enterprise storage, including reference architecture, engineering standards, and a five-year roadmap encompassing block, file, object, software-defined, and hybrid storage services.

• Guide architectural decisions for on-premises AI infrastructure, focusing on high-throughput and low-latency storage necessary for model training, inference, data pipelines, GPU platforms, and extensive unstructured datasets.

• Create patterns for data placement, lifecycle management, tiering, retention, encryption, immutability, replication, archiving, and secure data disposition.

• Design storage solutions that are highly available and recoverable, fulfilling performance, capacity, resilience, disaster recovery, and service-level objectives.

• Develop storage service tiers aligned with workloads and reusable architectural patterns suitable for virtualized, containerized, database, analytics, and AI environments.

• Oversee capacity forecasting, performance modeling, technology refresh planning, and financial analysis.

• Assess emerging storage technologies through proofs of concept, benchmarking, risk evaluations, and total-cost-of-ownership analyses.

• Provide technical leadership for modernization, migrations, consolidations, upgrades, and decommissioning projects.

• Implement observability, automation, infrastructure-as-code, configuration management, and self-service capabilities.

• Collaborate with cybersecurity, risk management, compliance, and data governance teams to enhance controls, evidence, recoverability, and resilience against ransomware.

• Act as the escalation point for intricate issues relating to storage performance, availability, interoperability, and data integrity; lead root-cause analysis and corrective measures.

• Produce architecture documentation, standards, decision records, executive presentations, and investment proposals.

• Mentor engineers, lead design reviews, and enhance engineering practices across infrastructure teams.

• Manage strategic technical partnerships with Dell Technologies, Pure Storage, NetApp, IBM, and other infrastructure collaborators.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

• Typically, a minimum of 10 years of experience in enterprise infrastructure, with significant responsibilities in storage engineering and architecture within large, complex environments.

• Proven track record in developing multi-year technology strategies, reference architectures, roadmaps, standards, and investment plans.

• Extensive expertise in SAN, NAS, object storage, storage networking, replication, snapshots, data reduction, quality of service, and high-availability design.

• Practical architecture and engineering experience with storage platforms from Dell Technologies, Pure Storage, NetApp, and IBM.

• Strong knowledge of data governance, data classification, retention, legal holds, encryption, access control, privacy, compliance, and secure data disposal.

• Experience in designing storage solutions for on-premises AI and high-performance data platforms, particularly with GPU-intensive workloads, parallel data access, high-bandwidth networking, and large-scale data pipelines.

• Expertise in capacity planning, performance analysis, workload characterization, availability engineering, disaster recovery, and cyber-recovery architecture.

• Experience integrating storage systems with Linux, Windows, virtualization, containers, Kubernetes or OpenShift, databases, backup platforms, and hybrid-cloud services.

• Familiarity with automation and infrastructure-as-code using tools such as Python, PowerShell, Ansible, Terraform, REST APIs, or similar technologies.

• Strong business acumen, capable of developing cost models, assessing vendor proposals, quantifying risks, and communicating recommendations to executive leadership.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, facilitation, and mentoring abilities, with a capacity to influence across organizational boundaries without direct authority.

• Relevant vendor or industry certifications in storage, cloud, security, networking, Kubernetes, or enterprise architecture are preferred.

• Experience in supporting sectors such as healthcare, financial services, or other highly regulated environments is preferred.

• Knowledge of NVMe, NVMe over Fabrics, Ethernet and Fibre Channel storage networking, parallel file systems, data lakes, and modern object-storage architectures is preferred.

• Familiarity with FinOps, chargeback or showback, sustainability planning, and enterprise technology lifecycle management is preferred.

• Reliable home internet service with a minimum of 25 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload speed.

• Capability to work from a dedicated space without interruptions to safeguard member PHI/HIPAA information.
