Principal Generalist Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Portugal.

📋 Description

• Design and develop production-level systems that are dependable, scalable, and easily observable.

• Take ownership of systems from start to finish, encompassing problem identification, design, data management, implementation, deployment, and operational tasks.

• Collaborate across application services, distributed systems, infrastructure, data pipelines, and machine learning systems.

• Troubleshoot intricate production issues across various layers.

• Make engineering decisions based on fundamental principles.

• Enhance performance, reduce latency, improve reliability, and increase cost efficiency.

• Contribute to the architectural and technical vision.

• Produce maintainable code and thorough documentation.

• Elevate engineering standards.

• Define problems clearly and assess when to apply machine learning versus deterministic systems.

• Manage data throughout the entire pipeline.

• Train, assess, and refine models.

• Create reproducible data pipelines.

• Deploy models and oversee their performance, drift, and associated costs.

• Diagnose system and model failures.

⛳️ Requirements

• Strong foundation in computer science principles (data structures and algorithms, operating systems, networking, distributed systems).

• Solid understanding of probability and statistics.

• Experience in building scalable production systems.

• Proficiency in multiple programming languages (Go, Java, Python, Rust, SQL).

• Knowledge of system performance under load and during failures.

• Familiarity with Linux, containers, and Kubernetes.

• Exceptional debugging capabilities.

• Ability to reason through invariants and potential failure modes.

• Expertise in data systems, streaming systems, machine learning infrastructure, and performance optimization.
