Principal Generalist Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Kenya.

📋 Description

• Design and create dependable, scalable, and observable production-grade systems.

• Take full ownership of systems from problem identification through design, data management, implementation, deployment, and operations.

• Collaborate across application services, distributed systems, infrastructure, data pipelines, and machine learning systems.

• Troubleshoot intricate production issues across various layers.

• Make engineering decisions based on fundamental principles.

• Enhance performance, latency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.

• Contribute to the architectural and technical direction of projects.

• Produce maintainable code along with comprehensive documentation.

• Elevate the engineering standards within the team.

• Assess when to utilize machine learning versus deterministic systems.

• Manage data throughout the entire process.

• Train, assess, and refine models.

• Create reproducible pipelines.

• Deploy models and oversee their performance, drift, and cost implications.

• Diagnose system and model failures.

⛳️ Requirements

• Strong foundation in computer science fundamentals (data structures and algorithms, operating systems, networking, and distributed systems).

• Proficient in probability and statistics.

• Experience in developing production systems at scale.

• Proficiency in multiple programming languages (Go, Java, Python, Rust, SQL).

• Understanding of system behavior under load and failure conditions.

• Familiarity with Linux, containers, and Kubernetes.

• Excellent debugging capabilities.

• Ability to reason through invariants and failure modes.

• Knowledge of data systems, streaming systems, machine learning infrastructure, and performance optimization techniques.
