Principal Engineer – AV Simulation and Evaluation

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Design and develop simulation and evaluation frameworks utilized by AV and ML engineers to expedite the advancement of Level 4 autonomous driving capabilities.

• Enhance efficient data formats for AV evaluation, focusing on performance, interoperability, and accuracy across Protobuf, Arrow, Parquet, and MCAP.

• Collaborate with AI and Robotics teams to identify their simulation and evaluation requirements.

• Create dependable services, APIs, data pipelines, and AV simulation and evaluation workflows and frameworks that operate at the scale of hundreds of millions of executions daily.

• Improve performance through profiling, parallelization, memory optimization, query enhancement, and protocol redesign.

• Develop diagnostic and observability tools to comprehend and troubleshoot data and testing pipelines.

• Promote the adoption of new standards and technologies within the physical AI tooling ecosystem.

⛳️ Requirements

• BS or MS in Computer Science or equivalent experience.

• 15+ years of professional experience in software engineering with an emphasis on distributed systems and data-intensive applications.

• Proficiency in Go, Python, or Java, with experience across the entire backend stack.

• Extensive experience in building high-performance, low-latency data systems, including binary serialization, efficient data encoding, and columnar data formats.

• Strong grasp of distributed systems, including concurrency, consistency trade-offs, latency optimization, and compute-efficient design.

• Capability to identify and resolve performance bottlenecks through optimization across the stack, including redesigning protocols and data models.

• Experience in designing and implementing workflows across distributed systems.

• Proven track record in developing foundational systems relied upon by multiple teams, ensuring high reliability and scalability.

• Excellent communication skills to convey complex system designs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, and to engage with users in their language.

• Ability to lead cross-functional projects, influence without formal authority, and navigate organizational boundaries effectively.

• Experience in building orchestration or workflow execution systems, such as Temporal.io or similar workflow engines.

• Familiarity with sensor data pipelines, including ROS, MCAP, AV logs, Parquet, Apache Arrow, or related domain formats.

• Understanding of AV and Robotics concepts, such as kinematics, control systems, computer vision, motion planning, and/or neural networks.

• Experience in enhancing legacy systems through incremental migration, deprecation, and architectural refinement.
