Principal Electrical Controls Engineer – Data Center Infrastructure

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Texas.

📋 Description

• Oversee the development, optimization, and deployment of sophisticated control systems within critical infrastructure products and automation platforms.

• Define and take ownership of control system architecture across PLC, BMS, EPMS, and ATS platforms.

• Create control system specifications, functional design documents, and subsystem interface definitions.

• Design and construct wiring harness systems, including schematics, harness architecture, panel layouts, specifications, component selection, and transition to manufacturing.

• Develop PLC/SCADA programs, HMI systems, and integrations with IT networks and facility equipment.

• Specify control logic, sensor integration, and communication protocols for intelligent power and cooling management.

• Validate control systems via simulation, testing, and commissioning processes.

• Facilitate Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT).

• Create system-level simulations and digital twins to verify control strategies.

• Design integrations with SCADA, CMMS, and cloud-based monitoring platforms.

• Establish design patterns and best practices for modular and reusable control logic.

• Lead root cause analysis and resolution of intricate control system issues.

• Assess emerging technologies and trends in automation.

• Develop and maintain architecture, control logic, and operational documentation.

• Collaborate with teams in electrical, mechanical, software, and facilities engineering.

• Align control system designs with business needs, timelines, and operational constraints.

• Conduct design reviews, technical workshops, and cross-functional planning sessions.

• Assist commissioning and field teams during deployment, troubleshooting, and optimization efforts.

• Engage with customers and supply chain partners to evaluate requirements, identify challenges, and design comprehensive data center infrastructure solutions.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering field.

• Over 8 years of experience in control system design and implementation.

• Proficiency in PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider Electric).

• Experience in Building Management Systems (BMS) integration and optimization.

• Knowledge of Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS/EDPM) for real-time energy analytics.

• Familiarity with Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS) control and failover logic.

• Strong understanding of control theory, system modeling, and simulation tools (MATLAB/Simulink).

• Experience with industrial protocols (Modbus, BACnet, OPC UA, Ethernet/IP).

• Awareness of NFPA, IEC, and ISO standards related to control systems and safety.

• Capability to work independently with minimal supervision as part of a global team.

• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret business publications, professional journals, technical procedures, and government regulations.

• Skills in writing reports, business correspondence, and procedural guides.

• Proficient in presenting information and addressing management, client, and public inquiries.

• Capacity to mentor junior engineers and share best practices.

• Ability to evaluate projects, identify risks, and formulate project milestones.

• Familiarity with stage-gate processes in project lifecycle management (PLCM).

• Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.

• Knowledge of low- and medium-voltage systems.

• Experience in hyperscale or colocation data center environments.

• A Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or a relevant engineering discipline is preferred.

• An active Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred.

• Experience in mission-critical environments such as data centers, manufacturing, or energy systems is preferred.

• Familiarity with digital twin modeling and predictive maintenance strategies is preferred.

• Willingness to travel domestically and/or internationally up to 25% of the time.
