Principal Azure Cloud Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Illinois, +1 more state.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and manage Azure cloud infrastructure along with shared platform services that support digital workloads.

• Implement and sustain Azure landing zones, subscriptions, networking, identity, and governance protocols.

• Create Azure PaaS, containers, and managed services as reusable platform functionalities.

• Ensure that platforms fulfill requirements for scalability, resilience, performance, cost-effectiveness, and reuse.

• Utilize DevOps and SRE methodologies, including CI/CD, monitoring, alerting, and operational readiness.

• Establish and operationalize essential platform services and tools for engineering teams.

• Provide standardized Azure platform functionalities, deployment patterns, and paved-road solutions to facilitate cloud adoption.

• Design and manage Infrastructure as Code using frameworks such as GitHub Actions, Terraform, or CDKTF.

• Develop reusable, modular deployment patterns that strike a balance between self-service and governance.

• Automate the provisioning of environments, configuration, and policy enforcement.

• Incorporate security-by-design principles across identity management, networking, encryption, secrets management, and auditability.

• Ensure that Azure solutions adhere to security, privacy, data governance, and regulatory standards.

• Assist in architecture reviews, risk assessments, and audits alongside security and risk teams.

• Design platforms with built-in observability, traceability, and operational controls.

• Lead significant projects and develop horizontal capabilities throughout the organization.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven hands-on experience in engineering solutions on Microsoft Azure within large-scale or regulated environments.

• Strong knowledge of Azure platforming, networking, identity, access management, and governance practices.

• Experience in designing for scalability, reliability, performance, and cost efficiency.

• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and manage production Azure environments effectively.

• Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code using tools like GitHub Actions, ARM, Terraform, or equivalent.

• Experience in developing and managing CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure and application delivery.

• Background in building reusable deployment frameworks, foundational automation, or internal platform tools.

• Understanding of IAM models, role definitions, and least-privilege access strategies.

• Experience with Azure API Management or other similar API gateway solutions.

• Knowledge of secure service exposure, rate limiting, and API lifecycle management.

• Proficiency in implementing monitoring, logging, alerting, and operational dashboards.

• Familiarity with SRE concepts such as SLIs, SLOs, and resilience patterns.

• Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant discipline (Computer Science, Engineering).

• Over 10 years of experience in cloud engineering, platform engineering leadership, or infrastructure roles.

• Proven track record of delivering and operating Azure environments.

• Experience in designing, implementing, and delivering large-scale Azure platforms.

• Experience in developing foundational cloud platform capabilities, engineering enablement tools, or shared services for internal development teams.

• Proven ability to drive large projects and collaborate with technology teams and leaders.
