This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.
• Lead the strategy and provide support for the formulation, measurement, and validation of the safety protocols for SAE Level 3–4 automated driving systems utilizing machine-learned models.
• Reference and interpret ISO 21448 (SOTIF), ISO 5083, and AVSC best practices to establish strategies for the safe development, validation, and deployment of autonomous systems.
• Assume ownership of the safety strategy for next-generation ADS architectures.
• Oversee the behavior-focused aspect of the ADS Safety Case, encompassing key claims, sufficiency criteria, and recommended evidence for the safety performance of AV behavior.
• Collaborate with teams in Software Validation, Embodied AI, Simulation, and Safety Metrics to define a comprehensive AV behavior validation methodology.
• Develop strategies for systematically breaking down ODDs and validating performance by behavior and as a whole.
• Partner on evaluation metrics, human benchmarks, safety launch targets, and safety performance indicators for AV behaviors and overall system efficacy.
• Evaluate AV performance across safety and reliability dimensions utilizing simulation, closed-course, and public-road data.
• Provide clear, prioritized feedback to engineering teams.
• Establish and manage an assurance process to validate sufficiency criteria and safety targets in support of launch readiness.
• Directly impact launch decisions for GM's next-generation automated driving solutions.
• Report to the AV Safety Strategy and Assurance organization.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related discipline.
• 8+ years of experience in machine learning, engineering, data science, or a related area.
• 8+ years of experience in the development of autonomous vehicles or robotics, or a related field.
• Proven experience working on production-intent AV programs.
• Technical safety leadership experience in AV development, including safety strategies, risk assessments, validation methodologies, or contributions to safety cases.
• Comprehensive understanding of AV behavior development, including ODDs, behaviors, evaluation criteria, and analysis of simulation, closed-course, and public-road testing data.
• Experience in applying AV safety standards and best practices, such as ISO 5083, ISO 21448 (SOTIF), and AVSC practices.
• Exceptional communication and storytelling abilities.
• Capable of explaining complex technical trade-offs to executives and non-technical stakeholders.
• Ability to influence cross-functional teams without direct authority.
• Strong problem-solving skills, comfort with ambiguity, and a proactive approach to learning and continuous improvement.
• A Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field is preferred.
• Preferred technical expertise with Python, R, Java, PySpark, PyTorch, TensorFlow, Scikit-learn, LangChain, SQL, LLMs, Generative AI, RAG, deep learning, reinforcement learning, NLP, SVM, XGBoost, Random Forest, Decision Trees, clustering, Microsoft Azure, AWS, Google Cloud Platform, MLflow, Docker, Kubernetes, GitHub, Jira, Tableau, Power BI, Pandas, and NumPy.
