Part-time Anesthesia Coder

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Perform coding for anesthesia professional services in accordance with the latest CPT, ASA Relative Value Guide, and ICD-10-CM regulations.

• Allocate base units, time units, qualifying circumstances, and anesthesia modifiers such as AA, QK, QX, QY, and QZ.

• Assess anesthesia records, surgical case documents, and notes from CRNAs and anesthesiologists.

• Confirm start/stop times, ensure procedure correlation, and verify documentation adequacy.

• Detect and address inconsistencies between documentation and charge capture prior to submission.

• Report documentation gaps to providers for inquiries and clarification.

• Manage daily Epic PB Charge Review work queues assigned.

• Prioritize aging anesthesia charge batches to avoid unposted-charge backlog and DNFB risks.

• Resolve charge edits, coding-related holds, and flags for missing charge information within set turnaround time and productivity benchmarks.

• Monitor and report on unposted anesthesia batch volume and its age.

• Identify systemic issues like interface errors and ongoing documentation gaps for coding leadership.

• Collaborate with Epic optimization and revenue cycle systems teams regarding charge routing, work queue setup, and recurring edit patterns.

• Ensure coding accuracy and productivity meets or exceeds departmental standards.

• Adhere to CMS guidelines, NCCI edits, payer-specific policies, and HIPAA regulations.

• Engage in coding quality audits and participate in provider education initiatives.

• Stay updated on changes in CPT/ICD-10-CM, ASA base unit updates, and payer policy modifications.

• Work with denial management and AR teams to address coding denials, underpayments, and payer edits.

• Report coding trends, backlog status, and documentation gaps to leadership and client stakeholders.

• Assist in onboarding and knowledge transfer for new anesthesia coding personnel.

• Perform other tasks as assigned.


⛳️ Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.

• An active anesthesia coding credential from AAPC or AHIMA, such as CANPC or CPC with proven anesthesia specialty experience, or equivalent qualifications.

• At least 2 years of practical experience in anesthesia coding, including base/time unit calculations, ASA crosswalk applications, and medical direction/supervision modifier assignments.

• Familiarity with CPT, ICD-10-CM, ASA Relative Value Guide, NCCI edits, and CMS/payer-specific anesthesia billing and reimbursement regulations.

• Practical experience with Epic PB Charge Review and coding work queues, or similar EMR/PM charge coding systems.

• Excellent attention to detail and the ability to independently investigate and resolve charge edits and documentation discrepancies.

• A solid grasp of HIPAA privacy and security regulations as they pertain to coding and charge review tasks.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel).

• Completion of all required regulatory/mandatory certifications.

• Maintain active credentials in good standing through ongoing education.

• Preferred: an associate’s degree or coursework in health information management, medical coding, or a related discipline.

• Preferred: AHIMA CCS-P or another multi-specialty coding credential.

• Preferred: Epic Charge Review or Professional Billing certification.

• Preferred: experience in coding for multi-facility or multi-client RCM/BPO environments.

• Preferred: experience working in remote, hybrid, or offshore coding team setups.

• Preferred: exposure to AI-assisted coding tools, CAC platforms, or automated charge-edit workflows.

• Preferred: knowledge of HFMA revenue cycle standards and best practices for denial prevention.
