This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.
• Support in-house counsel with pre-trial responsibilities
• Create responses, motions, briefs, pleadings, appeals, letters, and various legal documents
• Research, compile, summarize, and assess information for discovery responses and claims cases
• Communicate with clients, attorneys, claims personnel, insured individuals, and other parties regarding the status of cases and legal procedures
• Secure deadlines and ensure that objections and responses are submitted promptly and appropriately
• Prepare, organize, and format court documents, discovery materials, pleadings, affidavits, and trial resources
• File pleadings and manage digital case files within case management systems
• Compile administrative reports, discovery summaries, medical record summaries, and pre- and post-trial reports
• Assist attorneys with trial preparations, including exhibits, trial books, motions in limine, expert witness lists, and case statements
• Conduct research and analysis of statutes, judicial decisions, legal articles, depositions, legal codes, case law, vehicle valuations, medical treatments, aerial maps, and policy language
• Investigate facts and causes of action to aid in case preparation
• Support insured individuals in Small Claims cases by drafting trial briefs, preparing them for trial, attending trials, and defending the company when involved as a party
• Undertake special legal assignments while prioritizing and reprioritizing tasks for timely completion
• Complete required continuing professional education
• Certificate of completion from a paralegal program accredited by the American Bar Association; or an equivalent postsecondary paralegal program/degree with a minimum of 24 semester units in law-related courses; or a BA/advanced degree combined with one year of relevant law-related experience and attorney declaration; or a high school diploma/GED with three years of qualifying law-related experience and attorney declaration
• 0–2 years of experience as an insurance defense paralegal and/or comparable experience in insurance defense litigation
• Basic understanding of legal principles, terminology, and procedures
• Proficient written communication skills for drafting legal documents related to discovery, depositions, and motions
• Capability to operate effectively within a paperless environment
• Ability to communicate effectively with clients, attorneys, and other involved parties
• Knowledge and proficiency in word processing and case management software
• Completion of 4 hours of continuing education or the necessary hours as mandated by State regulations
• Preferred: Degree in paralegal studies and/or Paralegal Certificate with over 1 year of insurance defense or civil litigation experience
• Preferred: 1–2+ years of paralegal experience in civil litigation/insurance defense
• Preferred: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including strong grammatical abilities
