Outpatient Coder II, HB Coding

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Florida, +6 more states.

📋 Description

• Assign appropriate ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 codes for various outpatient visit types.

• Conduct thorough reviews of medical records and available documentation to accurately code diagnoses and procedures.

• Utilize knowledge of anatomy, physiology, clinical disease processes, pharmacology, and medical terminology to interpret health record documentation.

• Initiate physician queries when clarification of documentation is necessary.

• Adhere to guidelines from Coding Clinic for HCPCS, CPT Assistant, coding conventions, and instructional notes.

• Maintain a coding accuracy rate of at least 95%.

• Achieve departmental minimum standards for coding productivity and quality, including 90% productivity and 95% quality for each outpatient encounter type.

• Analyze changes related to systems and participate in the testing of software modifications.

• Identify opportunities to improve computer-assisted coding (CAC).

• Resolve NCCI edits utilizing approved hospital modifiers.

• Leverage 3M Encoder resources to enhance coding accuracy.

• Clearly articulate the rationale behind coding selections when required by data quality audits.

• Comply with Northwestern Medicine’s mission, values, Code of Ethics, Corporate Compliance Program, policies, procedures, regulatory requirements, and accreditation standards.


⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 3-4 years of coding experience in an acute healthcare environment.

• Required credentials include RHIT, RHIA, or CCS.

• AHIMA credentialing is necessary.

• Completion of 20-30 continuing education credits every two years is required to maintain credentials.

• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

• Proficiency in ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding, HCPCS, CPT codes, and modifiers.

• Strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, clinical disease processes, pharmacology, and medical terminology.

• Familiarity with HCPCS Level I and II, Chargemaster, CPT soft codes, and approved facility modifiers.

• A bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred.

• Preference for candidates with 4 years of coding experience in an acute healthcare setting.

• Candidates must reside in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio, Missouri, Michigan, or Florida.
