On-Call Reporter

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +15 more states.

📋 Description

• Engage in and propose story concepts during weekly editorial discussions

• Perform research, interview expert sources, and create articles for journalists

• Pinpoint scientific contexts and perspectives within contemporary news pieces

• Assist journalists in avoiding mistakes in the interpretation or reporting of scientific results

• Discover story concepts rooted in scientific research and data

• Verify articles and ensure that content is accurate, evidence-based, and communicated clearly

• Provide research, evidence, and context for SciLine’s editorial outputs

• Aid in the production of SciLine’s weekly newsletter for journalists

• Support short-term editorial initiatives and other reporting and writing tasks as necessary

• Report directly to the Editorial Director

⛳️ Requirements

• Minimum of two years of experience as a professional journalist

• Experience in covering health or science topics, or utilizing research and data to inform reporting on other subjects

• Exceptional writing skills, including knowledge of AP style

• Strong research and fact-checking abilities

• Capability to evaluate scientific evidence and identify credible sources

• Passion for science, data, and research

• Ability to convey complex information clearly to journalistic audiences

• Must be based in or willing to move to a state where AAAS operates

• Visa sponsorship is not available
