On-Call Project Archaeologist

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Lead and/or participate in studies involving archaeology and cultural resources.

• Perform background research, field surveys, laboratory analyses, and eligibility assessments.

• Compile study findings into technical reports suitable for agency and SHPO consultation.

• Assist with project-level analysis and programmatic solutions to ensure compliance with NEPA and Section 106.

• Execute archaeological surveys, testing, and data recovery in the Southeastern US and Mid-Atlantic regions.

• Oversee on-call personnel executing close-interval shovel tests and formal excavation units.

• Provide analysis and documentation for environmental regulatory reviews in accordance with NEPA, NHPA, and state mandates.

• Develop technical strategies, conduct analyses and documentation, and collaborate with technical peers.

• Author and generate technical reports and documentation.

• Assess resources for eligibility on the National Register of Historic Places.

• Formulate resource management recommendations and evaluate project impacts on resources.

• Work alongside architectural and landscape historians for multidisciplinary cultural resources management.

• Collaborate with engineers, scientists, planners, regulators, and other relevant stakeholders.

• Guide and mentor early-career team members.

⛳️ Requirements

• Master’s degree in Anthropology/Archaeology or a related discipline.

• At least 3 years of professional experience in a related field.

• Must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Qualification Standards for Archaeology.

• Capacity to conduct fieldwork in remote locations and a comfort level in outdoor environments.

• Strong knowledge of archaeology in the Southeast.

• Familiarity with NEPA, NHPA, and various state and federal environmental regulations.

• Competence in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

• Outstanding technical writing and communication abilities.

• Experience with ArcGIS and GPS equipment preferred.

• Registration as a Professional Archaeologist is desirable.

• Proven ability to serve as Field Director on archaeological field studies is a plus.

• Valuable experience in consultation with Tribal representatives is preferred.

• Strong adherence to project budgets, timelines, and deliverables.

• Strong problem-solving, creativity, and analytical skills.

• Excellent organizational and time management capabilities.

• Ability to work effectively within collaborative multidisciplinary teams.
