On-Call Project Archaeologist

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in North Carolina, +1 more state.

📋 Description

• Lead or participate in archaeology and cultural resources studies, whether as independent projects or as part of multidisciplinary efforts.

• Perform background research, field surveys, laboratory analyses, and eligibility assessments.

• Compile findings into technical reports that are appropriate for consultation with agencies and the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO).

• Assist in project-level evaluations and programmatic solutions for compliance with NEPA and Section 106, as well as relevant state regulations.

• Carry out archaeological surveys, testing, and data recovery in the Southeastern United States and Mid-Atlantic regions.

• Oversee on-call personnel conducting close-interval shovel tests and formal excavation units.

• Provide analytical support and writing for environmental regulatory reviews in accordance with NEPA, NHPA, and state regulations.

• Formulate technical strategies, execute analyses and documentation, and collaborate with both junior and senior technical colleagues.

• Author and produce technical reports and documentation.

• Assess resources for eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places.

• Create resource management recommendations and evaluate project impacts on resources.

• Partner with architectural and landscape historians for integrated cultural resources management.

• Collaborate with engineers, scientists, planners, regulators, and various stakeholders.

• Assist in managing project budgets, timelines, deliverables, and quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) tracking.

⛳️ Requirements

• Master’s degree in Anthropology/Archaeology or a related discipline.

• A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in a related field.

• Meets the Secretary of the Interior’s Qualification Standards for Archaeology.

• Proven ability to act as Field Director on archaeological field studies.

• Willingness to perform fieldwork in remote areas and comfort in outdoor environments.

• Knowledgeable about archaeology in the Southeastern United States.

• Familiar with NEPA, NHPA, and other federal and state environmental regulations.

• Skilled in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

• Strong technical writing and communication abilities.

• Experience with ArcGIS and various GPS equipment.

• Significant experience conducting or supporting consultations with Tribal representatives.

• Preferred: Registered Professional Archaeologist status.

• Capability to adhere to project budgets, timelines, and deliverables.

• Strong problem-solving, creativity, and analytical capabilities.

• Excellent organizational and time management skills.

• Ability to work effectively within collaborative, multidisciplinary teams.

• A commitment to ongoing professional development.
