Oceanographic Data Specialist

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Maryland.

📋 Description

• Review, input, and validate metadata and data in accordance with established CO-OPS Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for both new and existing water level stations, current meters, as well as meteorological and oceanographic sensors.

• Assess the quality of benchmarks, surveying leveling records, and other field-submitted data.

• Input details into the database and station packages.

• Evaluate submitted documentation and data based on approved criteria and provide written feedback.

• Upload preliminary water level and current meter data into the database.

• Assist in diagnosing issues related to water level, oceanographic, and meteorological data and metadata.

• Develop, revise, and maintain SOPs, manuals, technical documentation, and dynamic project instructions.

• Offer technical consultation to support CO-OPS partnerships.

• Deliver oral and written presentations as needed.

• Engage in team and operational meetings.

• Organize and lead meetings with field personnel regarding upcoming maintenance activities.

• Participate in sensor field installations and benchmark leveling to gain familiarity with CO-OPS observing systems and field procedures.

• Analyze data and create charts, graphics, and other representations of engineering, oceanographic, and meteorological information.

• Support NOAA CO-OPS, the recognized authority for tides, water levels, currents, and coastal oceanographic and meteorological data.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Master's degree in oceanography, meteorology, hydrology, physics, physical science, geophysics, civil engineering, or a Bachelor's degree accompanied by 2 years of relevant experience is mandatory.

• Familiarity with physical oceanographic principles, particularly those concerning tides and tidal currents, is preferred.

• Coursework at the undergraduate or graduate level in oceanography, marine engineering, meteorology, and related fields is preferred.

• Strong oral and written communication skills are essential.

• Proven ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team.

• Knowledge and experience with MATLAB, spreadsheets, statistical databases, and Structured Query Language (SQL) are preferred.

• Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the ESRI suite of GIS products or other commercial GIS software is preferred.

• Ability to collaborate effectively in both individual and team settings.

• Capability to accept constructive feedback and take appropriate actions based on it.

• Must verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States.

• Must successfully pass a federal government background check.
