Nuclear Energy, SMR Strategic Advisor

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in South Africa.

📋 Description

• Provide guidance to management regarding technology selection, technical positioning, and commercialization strategies for SMR, microreactor, and advanced-reactor platforms.

• Evaluate proposed reactor technologies, engineering packages, design concepts, and the capabilities of technical partners.

• Identify patents, software, designs, know-how, and research programs that are appropriate for licensing, assignment, option-to-license, or joint development.

• Connect the project with universities, research laboratories, technology-transfer offices, engineering firms, and nuclear-industry collaborators.

• Support sponsored research, technology licensing, joint development, and discussions concerning intellectual property transfer.

• Offer specialized input in areas such as reactor physics, thermal hydraulics, safety, materials, fuels, and software/modeling.

• Aid in creating a technical roadmap that encompasses research, engineering, demonstration, licensing, and commercialization.

• Selectively engage in meetings with strategic partners, investors, government representatives, technical counterparts, and South African nuclear organizations.

• Complete initial deliverables within 90 days, including technical reviews, technology prioritization, IP identification, partner introductions, and recommendations for a technical advisory board.

• Work in collaboration with executive management and engineering teams to develop commercialization roadmaps.


⛳️ Requirements

• A Doctorate (PhD), with professorial standing, senior researcher background, or extensive experience as a senior nuclear engineer.

• Typically, a minimum of 15 years of pertinent experience.

• Profound technical expertise in advanced nuclear fields such as SMR/microreactor design, HTGR/PBMR, reactor physics, thermal hydraulics/CFD, TRISO/advanced fuels, molten-salt reactors, reactor safety/licensing, nuclear materials, fuel cycle, nuclear heat applications, or nuclear engineering software/modeling.

• Proven track record in advanced-reactor research and development, commercial reactor programs, national laboratories, universities, or nuclear technology companies.

• Willingness to serve on a part-time advisory basis, dedicating 5 to 10 hours per month, with the flexibility to increase involvement as projects develop.

• Experience in patent evaluation, technology transfer, sponsored research, commercialization of research, or industry partnerships.

• Direct experience in developing or working with technologies suitable for licensing, assignment, or joint development.

• Established relationships with universities, research laboratories, reactor developers, technology-transfer offices, or nuclear technology organizations.

• International experience, along with familiarity with South African nuclear institutions and ecosystems.
