Mortgage Regulatory Counsel

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Act as the primary legal authority for matters related to fees, disclosures, documents, and document-vendor interactions.

• Analyze federal and state mortgage regulations, offering guidance on fee management, disclosure timing and content, document triggers and packages, and workflow requirements.

• Perform legal research and analysis concerning mortgage regulatory inquiries.

• Convert legal obligations into practical guidance and decision-making points for Compliance, QA, Technology, and business teams.

• Review and endorse regulatory requirements, interpretations, and legal stances before implementation when necessary.

• Assess system configurations, document logic, disclosures, workflows, and outputs for adherence to regulatory standards.

• Examine testing outcomes, findings, and evidence to ascertain whether system performance and document outputs align with legal expectations.

• Draw pass/fail conclusions and pinpoint necessary follow-up questions, testing, requirement modifications, or configuration updates.

• Collaborate with Technology, Operations, Compliance, and external vendors to address legal, system, and document-generation inquiries.

• Assist in implementing and maintaining document-vendor legal requirements within the loan origination system.

• Record legal interpretations, decisions, issue resolutions, and review findings for implementation, audit, examination, and internal review purposes.

• Provide prompt legal insights on unresolved issues, exceptions, and inquiries.

• Identify emerging legal challenges, gaps, inconsistencies, and risks, communicating necessary actions to stakeholders.


⛳️ Requirements

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.

• Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.

• Experience in mortgage, consumer financial services, regulatory compliance, or a related legal field.

• In-depth knowledge of mortgage regulatory requirements.

• Preferred experience with mortgage fees, disclosures, documents, and associated regulatory requirements.

• Preferred experience in supporting loan origination system document logic, disclosure behavior, or document-vendor integrations.

• Preferred experience with loan origination systems, disclosure processes, document review, or vendor-managed document solutions.

• Experience with DocMagic is a plus.

• Ability to work collaboratively across Legal, Compliance, Technology, Operations, and external vendors.

• Strong legal research and analytical capabilities.

• Capacity to interpret complex federal and state regulatory requirements and apply them to business processes, system functionalities, and document outputs.

• Proficiency in determining whether system configurations, workflows, and outputs meet legal standards.

• Advanced judgment in distinguishing issues that require formal legal interpretation from those needing practical clarification or guidance.

• Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to translate legal concepts into actionable guidance.

• Capability to manage multiple legal inquiries, reviews, and workstreams while adhering to deadlines.

• Skill in identifying gaps, inconsistencies, or risks in requirements, testing results, documentation, or system performance.
