Monitoring Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Pennsylvania.

📋 Description

• Oversee and manage the Nagios XI platform, which includes performing upgrades, applying patches, updating plugins, ensuring backups, and monitoring platform health.

• Integrate new devices, servers, and services into the monitoring system.

• Create, develop, and sustain custom checks and monitoring scripts utilizing NRPE, NCPA, SNMP, and bespoke plugins across both Windows and Linux environments.

• Adjust alerting mechanisms and thresholds to minimize false positives while accurately identifying genuine issues.

• Supervise and enhance platform performance, encompassing capacity, check latency, and database health.

• Maintain thorough documentation of configurations, runbooks, and processes.

• Collaborate with IT, networking, systems, and application teams to pinpoint monitoring deficiencies and convert business-critical services into checks.

• Assess new plugins, integrations, and automation prospects to enhance the platform.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline, or equivalent hands-on experience.

• Over 3 years of experience in systems or network administration.

• More than 2 years of experience administering Nagios XI, or Nagios Core with a solid familiarity of XI, in a production setting.

• Proficient scripting skills across platforms using Bash and/or Python for Linux checks and PowerShell for Windows checks via NCPA.

• Familiarity with SNMP, NRPE/NCPA, syslog, and standard network/server monitoring protocols.

• Comprehension of networking basics, including TCP/IP, ports, and firewalls, as they pertain to monitoring connectivity.

• Capability to work autonomously with minimal supervision.

• Excellent communication skills and the ability to convey technical monitoring data to other teams and leadership.

• Eligibility for any necessary U.S. Government authorizations regarding export-controlled commodities and technology.

• Preferred: experience with configuration management tools such as Ansible or SCCM.

• Preferred: experience integrating Nagios with ServiceNow.
