Meteorologist, Data Scientist

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Maryland.

📋 Description

• Work collaboratively with meteorologists from NCEP, NWS field offices, academia, and external partners to create forecasting tools for short to medium-range forecasts concerning hazardous weather.

• Utilize scientific and technical meteorological knowledge to develop tools for assessing hazard information.

• Contribute to published scientific works and participate in off-site conferences, symposia, and outreach events related to hazardous weather.

• Partner to transition forecasting tools developed at WPC and other NOAA locations into operational use at WPC and various NOAA offices.

• Create web applications using contemporary industry languages and tools, including GIS, Python, and PHP.

• Develop training resources to integrate new tools and methodologies into operational workflows.

• Design and train machine learning models to detect precursors of hazardous weather events.

• Implement AI-driven anomaly detection systems to identify inaccuracies or gaps in real-time forecasting data.

• Identify relevant satellite, land use, and meteorological datasets.

• Create forecasting tools for web pages or forecasting platforms.

• Establish methodologies and provide thorough analyses and recommendations independently.

• Utilize AI-driven data pipelines to automate the ingestion and preprocessing of meteorological datasets.

• Perform other related duties as assigned.

⛳️ Requirements

• A degree (e.g., B.S. or B.A.) from an accredited institution in Atmospheric Science, Oceanography, or other Geophysical Sciences, Engineering, Computer Sciences, or Mathematics.

• A minimum of 2 years of experience in relevant fields.

• Experience utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques for analyzing and modeling complex environmental or meteorological datasets.

• Background in software development support within a team setting.

• Proficiency in Python and Unix shell scripting in a UNIX/Linux environment.

• Familiarity with deterministic and ensemble prediction system datasets and their use in hazardous weather diagnosis and forecasting.

• Understanding of short to medium-range weather forecasting.

• Strong organizational skills with the ability to plan and execute projects effectively.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for documentation and presentations.

• Ability to support team initiatives, show respect for team members, and work towards team consensus.

• Experience with web-based mapping application development frameworks (e.g., ArcGIS, JavaScript, API) is preferred.

• Proficiency in data science frameworks and libraries like TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Scikit-learn, and experience with deep learning applications in weather forecasting is preferred.
