This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Maryland.
β’ Work collaboratively with meteorologists from NCEP, NWS field offices, academia, and external partners to create forecasting tools for short to medium-range forecasts concerning hazardous weather.
β’ Utilize scientific and technical meteorological knowledge to develop tools for assessing hazard information.
β’ Contribute to published scientific works and participate in off-site conferences, symposia, and outreach events related to hazardous weather.
β’ Partner to transition forecasting tools developed at WPC and other NOAA locations into operational use at WPC and various NOAA offices.
β’ Create web applications using contemporary industry languages and tools, including GIS, Python, and PHP.
β’ Develop training resources to integrate new tools and methodologies into operational workflows.
β’ Design and train machine learning models to detect precursors of hazardous weather events.
β’ Implement AI-driven anomaly detection systems to identify inaccuracies or gaps in real-time forecasting data.
β’ Identify relevant satellite, land use, and meteorological datasets.
β’ Create forecasting tools for web pages or forecasting platforms.
β’ Establish methodologies and provide thorough analyses and recommendations independently.
β’ Utilize AI-driven data pipelines to automate the ingestion and preprocessing of meteorological datasets.
β’ Perform other related duties as assigned.
β’ A degree (e.g., B.S. or B.A.) from an accredited institution in Atmospheric Science, Oceanography, or other Geophysical Sciences, Engineering, Computer Sciences, or Mathematics.
β’ A minimum of 2 years of experience in relevant fields.
β’ Experience utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques for analyzing and modeling complex environmental or meteorological datasets.
β’ Background in software development support within a team setting.
β’ Proficiency in Python and Unix shell scripting in a UNIX/Linux environment.
β’ Familiarity with deterministic and ensemble prediction system datasets and their use in hazardous weather diagnosis and forecasting.
β’ Understanding of short to medium-range weather forecasting.
β’ Strong organizational skills with the ability to plan and execute projects effectively.
β’ Excellent written and verbal communication skills for documentation and presentations.
β’ Ability to support team initiatives, show respect for team members, and work towards team consensus.
β’ Experience with web-based mapping application development frameworks (e.g., ArcGIS, JavaScript, API) is preferred.
β’ Proficiency in data science frameworks and libraries like TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Scikit-learn, and experience with deep learning applications in weather forecasting is preferred.
