Mechanical/Piping Technical Specialist I

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Texas.

📋 Description

• Oversee and provide technical leadership to a team of designers while acting as the lead designer.

• Ensure mechanical and piping deliverables and services are completed on schedule, within budget, and meet quality standards.

• Execute advanced design tasks as a technical expert on intricate design projects.

• Utilize project management controls for cost, scheduling, and quality assurance.

• Implement department design and drafting standards consistently.

• Clearly communicate project scope, specifications, design criteria, and any design modifications.

• Offer on-site support during the startup phase.

• Provide technical mentorship to less experienced drafting personnel.

• Coordinate work activities with team members and discipline leads effectively.

• Generate mechanical and piping installation specifications, subject to engineering review and approval.

• Lead and coordinate the design team to achieve objectives related to scope, schedule, and budget.

• Mentor junior staff members.

• Engage in squad checks to ensure proper coordination among design disciplines.

• Review other designers' calculations for accuracy, compliance with codes and specifications, and adherence to sound engineering practices.

• Assess construction quantities and provide cost estimates for construction.

• Assign tasks based on designers' technical expertise and experience, and monitor progress and quality.

• Consult with design leaders from other disciplines and ensure follow-up for necessary support.

• Take part in planning training programs, ongoing education opportunities, and professional development for staff.

• Operate under general supervision.


⛳️ Requirements

• An associate degree in Engineering Technology or Computer-Aided Drafting is essential.

• SPED (Society of Piping Engineers and Designers) Certification is preferred.

• A minimum of 12 years of pertinent industrial experience in mechanical/piping drafting and design.

• Proficiency in the knowledge and application of piping materials.

• Experience in designing moderately complex process and utility piping systems.

• Familiarity with the knowledge and application of piping supports and restraints.

• Conduct flexibility analysis of piping systems.

• Understanding of manual valve sizing.

• Knowledge of best practices for sizing piping systems.

• Experience in sizing compressible fluid piping systems.

• Identification, application, and specification of steam traps and liquid drainers.

• Identification, application, and specification of safety valves and devices.

• Selecting piping specialty items based on design criteria.

• Drafting P&IDs and GAs.

• Design of piping-specific equipment and inline instrumentation arrangements.

• Familiarity with specifications and installation details for construction bulk materials and equipment.

• Capability to create precise mechanical/piping installation documents from vendor equipment drawings.

• Knowledge of workflow/information flow between disciplines.

• Understanding of schedule constraints and information requirements for mechanical/piping deliverables.

• Ability to estimate the completion of assigned tasks accurately.

• Competence in developing mechanical/piping installation specifications with engineering review and approval.

• Ability to formulate construction cost estimates, detailed engineering schedules, and man-hour budgets.

• Knowledge and application of company engineering design and CAD drafting standards.

• Ability to lead a small team effectively.

• Skill in delivering presentations on Hargrove Engineers & Constructors services.

• Proficient in 2D AutoCAD and MicroStation.

• Advanced skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

• Strong verbal and written communication abilities.

• Good presentation skills.

• Capable of working virtually and building cross-divisional relationships.

• Ability to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods.

• Authorization to work in the United States.
