Marine Electrical Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Washington.

📋 Description

• Design, assess, and integrate electrical and electronic systems for marine vessels, which include power generation, propulsion, lighting, navigation, and communication systems.

• Ensure that electrical designs adhere to relevant marine regulations and standards, including CFRs, IMO, ABS, DNV, IEC, and SOLAS.

• Provide support for new vessel designs as well as refurbishment and modifications of existing vessels.

• Lead root-cause analysis and diagnostics for intricate electrical system issues on both new builds and existing vessels.

• Develop and execute corrective actions, upgrades, and system optimizations.

• Collaborate with naval architects, mechanical engineers, shipbuilders, and third-party vendors.

• Prepare specifications, schematics, reports, and progress updates.

• Review and provide feedback on detailed designs submitted by shipyard contractors.

• Conduct inspections and verifications to ensure compliance with regulatory, safety, and classification society standards.

• Prepare documentation for approvals, certifications, and audits.

• Stay updated on advancements in marine electrification, hybrid propulsion, and energy-efficiency technologies.

• Travel as necessary to conduct onsite vessel inspections.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of eight years of experience in the maritime industry, providing electrical design support.

• A Bachelor of Science degree from an ABET-accredited curriculum.

• Professional Engineer's License (PE) is preferred or a plan to obtain licensure.

• Strong understanding of marine construction, ship repair, safety standards, and regulatory frameworks.

• Demonstrated ability in shipyard and marine operations.

• Proficient in AutoCAD and MS Office applications.

• Familiarity with Rhino is advantageous.

• Capacity to perform onsite ship inspections.

• Maintain membership with SNAME, ASME, ASCE, or IEEE.

• Experience in vessel system design, including power distribution, lighting, receptacle layouts, and DC power systems with minimal supervision.

• Proven experience in integrating vendor-supplied systems into the overall vessel design, including electric propulsion, alarm and monitoring, internal communications, fire detection, navigation and external communication, and navigation light systems, with minimal oversight.

• Conceptual understanding of marine mechanical systems, including fluid handling, mechanical propulsion components, hydraulics, and HVAC.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with sound reasoning abilities.

• Detail-oriented with the capacity to interpret data and develop design solutions.

• Skilled in technical research, reporting, and clear written communication.

• Effective team player who can also work independently.

• Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to present technical ideas clearly.

• Willingness to travel by car, plane, and vessel.

• Ability to climb ladders, enter confined spaces, and perform physical tasks in various environmental conditions during vessel inspections.
