Director, Electrical Engineering

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Provide comprehensive leadership for the development of data center spaces for both current and upcoming projects.

• Supervise the electrical components of new product development, industry design trends, innovations, changes in code requirements, and design engineering.

• Manage a team responsible for multiple projects and product development tasks, all while prioritizing competing demands.

• Ensure that projects are in alignment with strategic corporate goals.

• Collaborate with the sales lifecycle process, including direct client interactions.

• Communicate with facilities operations, sales and marketing, and subject matter experts to enhance facility design.

• Define and propel the vision for design and engineering initiatives.

• Lead strategic planning for engineering projects.

• Assess emerging technologies and design methodologies.

• Represent the organization at industry forums and engage with the data center engineering community.

• Cultivate relationships with internal teams as well as external consultants, vendors, and contractors.

• Advise senior leadership on business strategy and product development matters.

• Promote collaboration and innovation through initiatives like the Employee Think Tank.

• Communicate with department leadership through comprehensive reports and presentations.

• Manage engineering activities from the conceptual phase through commissioning across the portfolio.

• Drive design and engineering decisions while balancing technical, budgetary, and business priorities.

• Oversee the qualification of consultants and vendors and recommend technology adoption.

• Integrate lessons learned into processes for ongoing improvement.

• Ensure accountability for team performance, budget management, and adherence to schedules.

• Oversee QA/QC processes and mentor and develop engineering staff.

• Manage team workload to ensure the timely delivery of high-quality work products.

• Recruit, lead, and manage the Electrical Subject Matter Expert (SME) team.

• Lead electrical design and engineering efforts, including site assessments, conceptual designs, basis of design, scope of work, and construction documents.

• Oversee inputs and deliverables to ensure data center spaces comply with requirements, codes, specifications, and leases.

• Develop and refine design standards.

• Coordinate with site operations to establish project requirements and design criteria.

• Address issues that arise after critical infrastructure becomes operational.

• Provide technical support to sales and marketing teams.

• Monitor new technologies and assess innovation opportunities.

• Develop and manage team learning and onboarding content.

• Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.

• Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the U.S. is strongly preferred.

• A minimum of 8 years of experience in an engineering management or leadership role is required.

• At least 15 years of experience in electrical design and construction is required; 20+ years is preferred.

• Experience in data centers is mandatory.

• Proven experience leading technical design teams.

• Cross-disciplinary knowledge of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architectural, and other critical data center fields.

• Strong understanding of the design, construction, commissioning, and operational processes for North American development projects.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

• Demonstrated experience in leading and developing electrical engineering teams.

• Experience managing a multi-project engineering workload in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.

• In-depth knowledge of electrical distribution systems, utility services, substations, medium-voltage and low-voltage systems, emergency and standby power systems, UPS systems, generators, transformers, switchgear, protection and controls, grounding, and electrical monitoring systems.

• Travel is required, expected to be between 15% and 25%.

• Ability to multitask and prioritize effectively in a dynamic environment.

• Strong leadership qualities, including coaching, mentoring, and team development skills.

• Strong technical judgment with the ability to balance engineering requirements with business, cost, schedule, constructability, and operational considerations.

• Exceptional organizational and project management skills.

• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.

• Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, BIM, Navisworks, and CFD modeling software environments.

• Knowledge of electrical engineering analysis tools, including short-circuit, coordination, arc-flash, load-flow, and power system modeling applications.

• Well-versed in building codes and ordinances, including the NEC.

• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

• Familiarity with AI tools for process automation and data analysis.
