Manager, Safety Certification – Standards

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the standards picture across various products and markets, including IEC 61508, ISO 13849, IEC 62061, ISO 3691-4, ISO 25119, UL 4600, and ISO 21448.

• Act as the designated Functional Safety Manager, responsible for the safety plan, lifecycle phases, gate criteria, competence records, and safety case.

• Conduct lifecycle gates and assess if the evidence provided is adequate and sufficiently independent.

• Create safety manuals and subsystem data packs, encompassing IEC 61508-2/-3 Annex D content, PFHD and architecture data, along with assumptions of use.

• Manage relationships with certification bodies from the scope and submission stage through findings and ongoing surveillance.

• Advocate for the safety argument to third-party assessors.

• Monitor regulatory compliance for EU Machinery Regulation readiness, track standards revisions, and assess impacts on the roadmap/customer conformity files.

• Evaluate field modification impacts and integrate safety anomalies from installations back into the safety argument.

• Collaborate with team members while constructively challenging technical work as necessary.

• Report directly to the CTO, independent of the engineering delivery line.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 7 years of experience in functional safety as a practicing engineer in embedded systems, hardware, or safety-critical software within industrial, automotive, aerospace, medical, or other regulated fields.

• Successfully guided at least one product through third-party certification from start to finish, personally managing a significant portion of the safety argument and defending it to an assessor.

• Extensive knowledge of IEC 61508 parts 1–3, particularly IEC 61508-2/-3 Annex D safety-manual requirements and systematic capability arguments.

• Familiarity with ISO 13849 and IEC 62061 from the supplier perspective.

• Proficiency in critically reviewing safety analyses, including diagnostic coverage claims, sources of failure rates, and fault models.

• Ability to influence others without direct authority; this role does not have any direct reports.

• Bachelor's degree or higher in an engineering discipline, or equivalent professional experience.

• Preferred qualifications: TÜV Rheinland FS Engineer or Exida CFSE/CFSP certification; experience in machinery and off-highway sectors; work involving safety-element-out-of-context or compliant items; familiarity with EU Machinery Regulation readiness programs; exposure to autonomy and SOTIF; experience with certification bodies or contracted assessors.
