Legal Counsel, IP & Technology

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Oversee and enhance the patent portfolio, which includes addressing office actions in collaboration with external counsel, facilitating freedom-to-operate/product clearance evaluations, and pinpointing inventions for patent applications.

• Oversee and enhance the trademark portfolio, which encompasses trademark prosecution and enforcement, recognizing key jurisdictions for protection, and performing knock-out checks in partnership with Marketing.

• Provide counsel to clients and business partners on transactional intellectual property issues related to trademarks, patents, trade secrets, licensing, and portfolio strategy.

• Draft, review, and negotiate agreements concerning the utilization, transfer, protection, development, and commercialization of intellectual property assets.

• Offer legal advice regarding open source licenses.

• Counsel on trademark and patent matters that arise in commercial transactions, product development, and business initiatives.

• Evaluate social media marketing for compliance with IP and consumer protection regulations.

• Assist corporate transaction due diligence by identifying IP risks, ownership issues, and compliance matters.

• Collaborate with Finance, Product, Privacy, Engineering, and Marketing to ensure legal recommendations align with business goals.

• Track legal changes that impact patent and trademark transactions and apply findings to client counseling and contract strategies.

• Report to the Deputy General Counsel for Commercial, Litigation & IP.

⛳️ Requirements

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school in the United States.

• Active membership in good standing with at least one state bar.

• Minimum of 5 years of legal experience at a national or regional law firm, specializing in patent prosecution for consumer software and hardware technology.

• Proven experience in IP counseling, including trademark, patent, and open source issues.

• Experience and/or a keen interest in drafting, revising, and negotiating complex contracts related to intellectual property rights.

• Demonstrated enthusiasm for utilizing AI-powered tools and technology to enhance efficiency.

• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively within cross-functional teams.

• Detail-oriented, capable of prioritizing and managing competing demands in a fast-paced setting.

• An undergraduate degree in a technical field such as computer science is advantageous.

• Additional experience as in-house counsel at a consumer tech company is a plus.

• Experience in trademark prosecution is a plus.
