This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Provide guidance to product, engineering, and trust & safety teams regarding content safety, consumer protection, intellectual property, privacy, data security, and relevant industry regulations.

• Offer product counsel for web hosting, site development, content publication, ecommerce, social media, and related offerings.

• Advise on compliance with data protection and privacy legislation, including GDPR and CCPA.

• Guide the implementation of consent frameworks for digital marketing and advertising initiatives.

• Develop scalable processes for compliance documentation.

• Monitor and prepare for forthcoming regulations.

• Engage with global industry groups and represent Automattic with regulators and government bodies.

• Collaborate with trust & safety teams on policies regarding freedom of expression and user safety.

• Create compliance processes and workflows for the legal team.

⛳️ Requirements

• Juris Doctor (JD) from a US-accredited law school with 5+ years of pertinent experience (or an exception for EU-based attorneys).

• Understanding of open source, user-generated content, web hosting, social media, ecommerce, digital advertising, and associated privacy and regulatory needs.

• Capability to operate independently and thrive in an asynchronous work environment.

• Openness and capacity to venture into areas such as litigation or intellectual property if necessary.

• Competence in providing recommendations and clear insights with incomplete information.

• Familiarity with DSA, UK and Australian Online Safety Acts, EU AI Act, and global age-assurance laws is a significant advantage.
