This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Florida.
• Provide support to the Chief Counsel and Deputy Chief Counsel for the Florida Highway Patrol, along with other assigned FHP Troop Legal Advisors.
• Assist attorneys in managing Department civil, administrative, and appellate litigation, primarily related to asset forfeitures involving the Florida Highway Patrol.
• Draft pleadings, orders, motions, memoranda of law, and various legal correspondence.
• Conduct legal research and gather data as needed.
• Oversee attorney calendars and monitor important deadlines.
• Organize litigation files within the case management system.
• Submit litigation documents to clerks of court and/or judges.
• Arrange and schedule court hearings.
• Responses to qualifying questions from applicants must be explicitly detailed in the employment history.
• Clearly define software systems, actual work experience, and duration of employment.
• Familiarity with court filing requirements is essential.
• Understanding of how to properly prepare court pleadings and legal correspondence.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and general computer skills.
• Willingness to learn new software applications.
• Capability to conduct both legal and general research.
• Ability to work independently without close supervision.
• Competence to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment with a strong focus on detail.
• Skill in interacting with clients in a courteous and professional manner.
• Commitment to maintaining confidentiality.
• Travel, including overnight trips, may be necessary.
• Completion of a Level 2 background investigation and obtaining CJIS security clearance, including fingerprinting, are mandatory employment conditions.
• Applicants requiring CJIS security clearance must disclose any criminal records that are sealed or expunged.
• Preference will be given to those with at least two years of legal office experience as a paralegal or legal assistant, particularly in drafting legal documents and pleadings.
• Preferred experience includes work with civil forfeitures and/or criminal law practice.
• Additional preferred qualifications: knowledge of court filing requirements, online legal research tools, civil/appellate/administrative litigation, state travel regulations, and scheduling/managing calendars.
